I was ready to go into this post both guns blazing, but then I realized I was not sure what the heck it was about. My spyde sense told me it was a trap and I would end up looking foolish so I will wait until someone who is smarter than me posts.
What's to go off with both guns blazing about? My #1 POC FD does this as a fund raiser. The village gets the cost of the water nd we get the rest.
Okay. I was thinking along the lines of tactics at first like filling a pool for a WUI incident. Then I remembered a story about a Chief getting fired over filling his neighbors pool with a fire truck. I have never heard about filling pools for fund raising, we don't have pools in our area. So it would appear that I over thought the post! I guess I would not see anything wrong with using 2 1/2 hard suction to fill a pool, if we had any, pools or 2 1/2 hard suction that is.
We've done it a couple of times over the years in emergencies. The most recent was filling troughs at a ranch to water the horses while the ranch got their water well repaired. We just prefer not to take a tanker out of service.
Not sure I'd want my kids swimming in what comes out of our tanker...
We have always filled pools. It use to be a free service for the community. Over the last 5 years we have had to charge because of fuel cost and we only use village water. We make $50.00 filling a pool the rest goes to the village to pay for the fuel and water.
I put this up because a lot of departments have quit filling pools do to the fact that they have ripped someone's liner and have had to replace it. Or it takes 3 to 4 guys to fill a pool.
Jim, If you take a hand line with no nozzle on it and flow water; you will find that the end what's to flutter all over. Plus when it is doing so it is hard to hang onto thus causing the poor person holding it to let go and possibly damaging the liner. By hooking on the 2.5" hard suction to the end of the hose and tying it of to the ladder you no longer get that flutter nor do you need so many people for a pool fill detail. One or two people can do it with no problem. It doesn't matter if you are pumping it off from the tanker or out of a portable pond with a portable pump.
This may be a help to departments that use to fill pools and quit doing it or maybe give some department the idea to use this has a fund raiser.
Jim, Your department doesn't have any portable pump's. Or go mutual aid to anyplace that has hydrant's?
Yeah, I got to thinking about it and we do keep 2 1/2 on the tender, and a little on the Type 6 engines. On the pumpers we have 5 inch. It is a neat idea to fill pools, I just cant think of any one around here that has a pool! We don't rely on drafting or pumping out of ponds a lot in my area but we do have some portable pumps that we can use if we are lucky enough to find water. Mostly we rely on folda tanks and tender shuttles. A wet year for us would be 9-11 inches of precipitation.
