We don't do inspections as we leave that up to the LA State Fire Marshal's Office, but we do perform pre-planning on all new structures and renovations.

I would be interested in the form.

Pre-plans in my department are done by each fire station Captain for locations that present the potential for life loss, or property loss from businesses that have materials stored, used or handled on site that could pose a problem for firefighters or adjacent populations. 

Fire inspections really (in my opinion) need to focus on just three main points.

1. Identify the presence of hazardous materials, especially for any hazard ranking >3 using the NFPA 704 Hazard Identification Diamond.

Note: All hazmat's need to be separated by either:

a. 20-foot distance,

b. 18-inch minimum separation wall, or

c. approved storage cabinets.

2. Ensure that all exit pathways are kept clear and safe to enable safe egress for the public and/or employees.

3. Ensure that building address is visible and makes use of a contrasting background so you can easily identify the location during an emergency.
