Does anyone have ID Cards for their department? If so, and you went though an online company to create and print these, I'm currently trying to research one to go with, but I'm having a difficult time with it. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appriciate it. Currently my department has no means of proof of identity that we are, in fact with the fire department.

Mike, here are some ideas for funding 1. Maybe your county fire service would buy the equipment to make the ID cards. 2. Several fire depts go together to buy equipment to use between them. 3. Possibly a grant out there federal or other. 3. Sometimes these companies that sell the equipment need a write off. Try these the worse that could happen is they say no. Good Luck.

One thing to think about. Positive ID of public safety personnel is a national security situation. You don't want someone running around with ID that says they are a member of a fire company if they use it for bragging rights or getting on a fireground when they shouldn't be there.

Be sure that personnel have up to date cards and personnel tags when needed.

We bought the equipment/software to make the ID cards in 2004. Overall it wasnt that expensive to purchase. We purchased the ID system fron A Photo ID. The ID cards are remade annually to keep all information current.

I got our id's  from a neighboring fire dept that has the machine to print them the machines ar kinda expensive but are well worth the money to invest in one but be sure that none of your guys take the id's with them when they leave the dept(quit) or if they are on different dept you might want to express if they are on other fire scenes with their other dept not to use their id's i know i have had guys that have gotten their id's and not seen them for a month after the just want the flash of the fire dept not the work but maybee that is an idea to help

This is exactly why we are looking into creating these. At this point, I can't honestly prove to you I'm a firefighter with my company, other than the gear in the back of my truck, and the certifications in my filing cabinet. Which I don't carry with me. Another (more simple) reason, is lately I've been seeing fire police more and more. These guys will not let you pass (if you arrive late) without positive idenfication or the ride on the truck. We have allot of guys coming from work, or school, and need to get passed these guys. Its not a HUGE deal, but its a more simple reason to have them.

Thanks Capt', I'll start looking into this, and maybe contact local departments to see if they already have equipment, or if they would like to do a group buy deal.

i would do exactally that i know arround here most of the fds work together that is the way it should be i would think that if you did find a dept that had a machine they would print them out for a little charge like maybee a couple bucks for each to cover the cost of their cards i offered to pay the dept we got ours from but they refused payment also go prepared get a digital camera and a flash drive to have your pics on take a good clear pic of your dept members to take with you you will be suprised what being prepared will get you also have a logo to put on your cards that only the dept has or has acess to that way no one can duplicate your dept id's but i hope this helps also i had two id's printed for our members i had one for them to put in the walllet and another to have with them on a fire scene to turn in when they are on scene to make sure we were not missing someone they get them back at the end of the scene kinda to keep up with who is their or not and to make sure we haven't got any problems with someone missing

My county is actually in the process of going to a universal ID card system for ALL responders in the county (LEOs, Fire, & EMS). The need came partly from April 27, 2011. My coverage area was hit with an EF4 tornado. We were assisted by multiple depts from 3 different counties. Assignment coordination was an issue, because many volunteers from other agencies showed up POV. My understanding is that the cards will have the holder's picture & rank & and dept name on the front, and cert levels (fire, medical, & HazMat) on the back with a swipe strip. The Sheriff's command vehicle, which is usually the CP on major incidents, will have a swipe reader with computer log. An of course these cards will also help the public to ID us, as sadly we have had problems with impersonators in the past.
