The new superintendant of the South Carolina Fire Academy asks some tough question and offers some creative solutions to the problem of volunteer firefighter certification and just what that should mean.

Good Morning Bob! I hope you are having a pleasant day. :)
As my Chief said in a meeting the other night every person is essential to the fire department no matter what their role is, but to remember to do things safely and according to the standards and guidelines set by our department for the role that you are filling.

It's Friday .... Friday's are almost always pleasant.
Any position should have a defined set of required skills and defined required training. By doing that you will allow them to do their jobs safely.

This isn't a game and we're not keeping score. Claiming that something that doesn't exist won't be awarded is delusional.

Don, that was a weak and inaccurate analogy. The correct analogy would be to have ambulance crew members who are not EMTs or Paramedics.
That has happened for at least 40 years, especially in volunteer EMS agencies. There are drivers and 3rd riders who assist patients in ways that don't require EMT or Paramedic certification.
If you're going to use an analogy, use one that is a comparison to what is actually being discussed. Exterior firefighters do fire contact, they assist in moving hoses, ladders, and apparatus, and they certainly do not avoid firefighting of any kind.
Based on your omission of the obvious, that implies that both exterior firefighters and non-EMT EMS folks are indeed valuable, since they don't fit the artificial limitations you apply.
You still can't resist taking the conversation to imaginary extremes, can you?

I'd take the word of people with whom you actually ride over the uninformed opinion of someone who doesn't know you or the EMTs with whom you work.
