Every year we have functions for the kids in or coverage area such as for easter we have an easter egg hunt and give treat bags. halloween we have a costume parade and at the end we give out candy and costume prizes. and for christmas we parade santa around the area with christmas music playing an when we are done we have santa at the station to here request and give the kids candy we also give treats to the kids in the hospital. we also did fire prevetion week for local grade schools when requested. I was wonder what other departments do for the kids or their communities?

We have recently resurrected our annual Christmas Parade that involves local businesses and organizations that choose to participate. We put on a Roast Beef Lunch for all the folks that decide to come out for the festivities.

My one department takes Santa around to kids who are severaly sick, and there parents hav astranomical medical bills. We get to gether with the local buisness's, and they provide the gifts, that the children want, and we go out with Santa, and bring christmas to them. Nothing better then seeing there faces as Santa show's up on a fire truck bearing gifts.
We have a couple of Parades in the winter as well, one for a toy run and one for the snowsuit fund. A small group also runs an Adventure Race with all proceeds going to the area Cancer Centre. There are numerous community events and station tours, birthday parties, etc. Basically whatever we are asked to do, if we can manage it with our current staffing issues, we do it.
Over the years we have done basically the same thing: Halloween party with candy, games and prizes for the best costumes; Easter egg hunt the day before Easter; and breakfast with Santa where we make huge piles of pancakes, bacon and so on. Santa shows up at the firehouse in one of the pumpers and hands out presents. Since we don't have a school in our primary response area we don't do that kind of stuff.

We recently cut out the Halloween party because of lack of attendance in recent years - all of the youngsters have grown up and left town. Santa's breakfast and the egg hunt may go that same route in the next couple of years.
The schools here have a new policy where they don't allow the fire department to send messages home to the parents (bulletin) and since then all our events have also suffered. We used to do fire prevention at the school for grades k 1 and 2 now we just do grade K. We do have a santa run around town, passing out candy canes and lollipops, but thats about the extent
we still do not know why they quit having the fire prevention done but we had fun doing it and we gave out coloring books crayons and fire prevention materials we would even have a firefighter in full turn out gear with scba to show what we looked like and told them not to be afraid and not run and hide from us we were there to help. they would not tell us why they cut the program when we ask why. we also noticed a drop in kids attending but we still have the parties anyway.
On Halloween night we take the trucks out with candy and drive around the two main population centers in our township. It accomplishes two things: 1)It's good PR and a chance for us to interact with the public and 2)Slows down traffic to help protect the kids. We also have a Halloween party at the fire station on a different night that is usually well attended.

We park cars at the High School football games and have a couple fire trucks along with the EMS unit that has to be there anyway. Play Donkey Basketball in the spring when the school asks for a team. EMS side of our station is doing a free CPR class next month. Fire prevention week at the local elementary.
