As summer approches i hope everyone is doing well and i urge you to take care to make sure you take a sufficient amout of water to scenes and take breaks when needed.

I would like to know how many of you wear safety equipment?

I used to wear a helment (advent3) elbow and knee pads.

If you work alone, Make sure that someone knows where you are they check in with you at intervals. i also suggest you carry a celphone or radio.

You are exactly right inregards to the coming weather. I currently decide the level of Personal Protective Equipment needed based on the call's situation. The basic PPE that I wear are coveralls, Strucutural Fire Helmet, Structural Fire Boots, Flashlight, Cell Phone, Portable Radio, Digital Camera, 5 Gas Multi Gas Detector, and T Pass alert device. For Respertory protection, again it is based on the call's situation, typically my investigation preceeds the overhaul of the fire scene, therefore I ususally begin by wearing SCBA, followed by filtered mask as conditions permit. The highest level of Personal Protective Equipment that I have used and have trainined multiple times in is LEVEL A, for those invironments that are to toxic to be in.
i agree with you, we should wear PPE and if possible, do your investigation with a partner.no one know what could hapen alone on a scene.

stay safe

Based on the situation I carry everything from bunker gear to a half face respirator. I never remain on scene without at least a cell phone if not a walkie talkie, and as many arsonists return to the scene within 24 hours of setting the fire, my Fire Chief realizes the importance of my security so I have a police commission and am always armed for my protection. Be safe.
