Everyone has that favorite memory or funny thing that happened. Mine would be my first ride on the firetruck, responding to my first call. For a second I had no idea what to do until someone told me to get my gear on and get on the rig. Longest ride of my life, even though it was like 1 min lol. whats yours? (I am new to the fire service, been in for almost a year, just a few months away)
P.S. this post probably has been started before but lets start a new one for all the new firefighters to share or the older members to share old experiences or maybe they have some new ones.

My best memory would have to be my first interior attack. I was 2nd man, thick smoke, couldn't get too far in(it was a quanset shop), called for ventilation, as soon as that started, found the fire and we knocked her down and out. It was awesome.
I've only been on for a year as well, but my favourite memory so far is the first in house fire we had right around the corner from my station. The call came in right at shift change, no time to check any of the equipment, I had just put my gear on the truck. You could see the flames as soon as you turned the corner, and felt the heat blasting you when you stepped off the truck. It was really intense, especially trying to work with half of the crew from the last shift.

It was a great fire, everyone got to play, no one was seriously injured or killed.
What stands out for me is the first time I rode the tailboard, or backstep, as we called it. It was the 1959 Mack C 85 pumper that I remember them getting brand-new, in 1958. It was for a grass fire, April of 1968.
That's 43 years ago now, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
Besides the first fire my most memorable moment was extrication on a car and I crawled inside the car to comfort and watch the 6 yr old girl that was inside while extrication was going on, she was scared and wouldn't let go of my hand. She wasn't seriously injured but she wouldn't let go of my hand and I rode with her in the back of the ambulance until we arrived at the hospital.
My best memory was my first structure fire. I was on a hose line outside a ripping house fire and my partner turns to me and says "I have to pee." So he peed in his bunker gear.
I've had lots of great memories, the first working fire that I was taken into, it had self vented and the visibility was great (its not often that you get to see what you're doing) Once we pulled up to a car fire and after stepping off the tail board and rounding the back of the pumper realizing that the car that was on fire was my own, I had loaned it to a friend while I was at the station so he could run some errands, but the most memorable was Christmas Eve of 1981, we were sent to assist EMS with a woman in labor, I wound up driving the Ambulance so the 2 medics could be in back with the Mom to be. About half way to the hospital they told me to pull over and get in back because they needed another set of hands to help with the delivery. Made for an excellent Christmas.
Yeah....you could say that I'm not a rookie. Been doing it since 78 and before that grew up in my Dads station
My best memory of the fire service happened 11 years before I ever joined. I was 5 and have this vague memory of a controlled burn the fire company did of a school. Of course I didn't know it was a controlled burn just that my uncle and the other guys were burning down a building. Its the first time I remember the fire company. But what I remember most is the this tabel full of sandwiches. To a little kid it seemed huge.

Actual fire memory was the first time I was in charge of a working alarm back in 82. Had a house fire in district with a working basement fire. Everything went pretty good. Luckily I had good fire fighters that day. Even though I was only a Captain, the other Chiefs let me stay in charge. We have a policy that if a higher ranking officer arrives from another station they can assume command. I told one chief he could take over and he told me its all mine. I felt good knowing he had confidence in me.
Afterwards the nozzleman (a past assistant chief) queationed some things I did while we at the fire house. It turned into one of the best training sessions we ever had. He told me I did good and just wanted to pull my leg.
we had a fire on june 11 2010 plane crashed into at high school it took 8 hour to put out and couple day for s&o and fire watch
If there was a prize for best story, this one would win hands-down...this is what it's all about right there...
Great story man! I agree with David. This is what it is all about.
It was just a day ago when we got a smell of smoke in the house call at 0430 we walked into the house and smelled a skunk sure enough the skunk was under the house lol.
