And why would I need to identify myself when I'm off duty. If I'm on duty I am wearing my uniform and badge. If I am off duty why is there a need to be identified?
We have a photo ID badge but hardly carry it... I can't help myself so sorry I gotta ask the question, Why would you need to identify yourself as an off-duty firefighter?
If someone came up to me during a fire and said they were Joe so and so from XYZ Fire Dept. I would say thanks for offering your assistance but you need to step back behind fire line tape.
Car accidents (it's the same) soon as we arrive, I am clearing out everyone who is not working for us. This includes, nurses and doctors, sounds awful but sorry it has bit us in the butt with a liability before.
Once someone comes off their 1-year probation with my dept., they are issued a wallet badge, and we are in the process of getting new badges for our parade uniforms. Also, we all have a department license plate on the front of our vehicles. Further, here in West Virginia, we can get a firefighter or volunteer firefighter plate.
Aside from those of us who practically live in our company's t-shirts, we do have ID tags that we can carry around if we so please. Otherwise, since we are from such a small town, 1 sq. mile, most people know us just from seeing us around the borough.
I am a volunteer in upstate ny a small fd with one Engine-Rescue, one Engine-Tanker and a brush truck. there are old department issued shirts older members have and duty coats we reccived at our holiday banquet. recently we had members purchase hats and polo shirts.
