Hey All--

I'm doing some research for a paper I'm working on dealing with Rural and Volunteer fire departments. The questions I pose to you is this:

Do you have apparatus for specific jobs? (rescue truck, engine, pumper, etc...)
What consists your typical responses? (Structure fires, MVA's, brush fires, etc...)
What is your typical fuel consumption in your fiscal year? (Can be an estimate. I don't need hard data for this part.)

I am looking into the ideas and applied practice of using rescue pumpers or multi-discipline apparatus in the rural and volunteer environments as being possibly more economical in today's economy. In order to do this I need a cross section view of what other rural departments besides mine and the ones in my surrounding area are doing. Your responses will help my research greatly and when I have a finished product I'll let you all know.

Thanks!

My volunteer station has a pumper tanker. We have one hydrant in our zone so carrying 1500 gallons on our 1st out truck made sence to us.

My paid station runs a rescue pumper. We use this truck for all calls.
We have 2 "rescue" pumpers with 1000 gallons, Class A foam, and a full set of Holmatro tools, and Paratech struts. In today's financial environment, it makes sense to have a multi-purpose apparatus.

Both of our engines are rescue engines. Both have 1100 gallon tanks, 1250gpm pumps, and hydraulic tools. One engine has a rear dump and can be used as a tanker.

Structure fire response is both engines(if we have the man power), tanker and a brush truck( again if we have staffing). MVA's we usually run one engine and the second engine if it's on the interstate and/or bad weather or if we know we'll need both engines or both sets of tools. Car fires get one engine and last summer we sent a brush truck in case the median or shoulders are involved. Grass fires we send two brush trucks and the tanker.

We have 2 older duece and a half tankers and 2 pumpers and a brush truck and a Rescue unit (which is shown in my profile picture) and we also have two rescue boats. Our district we have a lake and several ponds we can use but our tankers carry 2500 gallons of water a piece just in case we do not have an avalible water source. We have a little of everything some structure some brusch fires so we just have a variety. We have a lot of wildland so during the summer time we have several brush fires.
