How would your Dept handle this situation?
In Fairmont MN a LEO and a good samaritan were shot and and another person was found dead. The officer and the civilian were first responders to a house fire.
FAIRMONT, Minn. — Police in southern Minnesota say an officer and Good Samaritan were shot while responding to a house fire, and a third person was found dead nearby.
Fairmont police said in a news release that the officer was the first to arrive at the scene of Tuesday night's fire. They said the Good Samaritan was helping the officer when both were shot. Both have been hospitalized.
Police said that during the course of their investigation, a third person was found dead near the residence. Police did not say how that person died.
Police did not release any additional details about the fire or the shooting, including the victims’ names. However, they said they do not believe there is any further danger to the community..
How would your dept handle this situation?

I think this is a perfect scenario for us to learn from because this is all the info we would usually get enroute to a fire.

I read the other post. Since things like that don't happen around here, or haven't yet happened, we would likely have done the same thing. Start the 360 without a second thought about wackjobs waiting for us.

I agree with you whole heartedly, Ralph. And there are many things that I, personally, do keep in the back of the noggin.But there are things, incidents that I haven't heard of, such as this, so therefore it would be unknown to me which means that I would have likely done the same thing if it were to happen here.
Maybe the "Jim Dandy" who sits and thinks all day of crazy what-ifs, might think of something like this, but me, personally, not on my daily list of to-do's.
Now knowing this situation, it will be remembered, I'm sure, so next time I'm walking up to the door, there may be a chance of saying, "whoa, hold on a sec.....I remember....". Then keep walking to the door.

But Im asking how would the fire dept handle this if they got this info over the radio while enroute it will change your whole approach because of the time and all the other circumstances so theres alot of things to get ready for once you are cleared.

It does depend on the information provided, but if it was mentioned that there were shots fired and people down....it most definately would change the approach. The fire now becomes secondary....stage and wait for LEO to do their thing.

This isn't the first time I have heard of this happening. Its not that common but it does happen. Just do a general search of firefighters ambushed you would be suprised the number that are there. Fairmont is not that big of town only 10k people. So it can happen anywhere.

And during that time you might have to change from an offensive approach to a defensive approach depending on exposures and the length of time the fire has to build while your waiting. And you might also have to do it with less people if you have ff/emt so a lot can change in an instant.

Depends on whether we were dispatched to a house fire without any other information being given or we were advised of the shooting we read about here. If we knew what we read here we'd simply stage. I hope no firefighters ever find themselves in a situation like these guys did.

Yep.
Although if such an event were to occur.....priority to save the structure aren't going to be as great as worrying about exposure.....Especially considering if the person is desperate enough to set fire to ambush responders....who knows what kind of booby traps etc would be inside the structure? In such a case, I would have no problem letting the house burn.

Wow how bad is the world, So sad. As far as my department I would not know. Maybe stage for more LEOs would be my choice. Then start the fire attack but if the person was not found. I would still worry until we were out of the area.

Based on the information given in your scenario, we would stage at a safe location until the Police secured the scene. Then we'd roll in and go to work.
