We go in and do talks to all of the elementary schools, let them try on gear and climb through the engines.

Fire Prevention parade last Sunday starts the week off, parade ends at the firehouse with free food/drink and an open house of our new equipment. We call it fire prevention month, as we go out to all the schools 5 public elementary, 5 private schools for prevention activities with the little ones.

The annual "go talk to the schools" and area public relations and station tours.  We also have our Open House with station tour, apparatus tours, smoke house, burn cells, hose lines for kids, medical helicopter display, extrication demo, speciality teams demos, etc. My particular station does a annual pumpkin carving night and dinner for our station members and family and incorporate fire safety for the kids.  Remember " Fire Safety begins with you, be Fire Safe".

We have an annual open house, with a live rescue skit, a smoke house, tours of the trucks, puzzles and a scavenger hunt for the students. We also go to the town school and have a poster contest and can collecting contest (each class wins a pizza party). We host a day for the Pre K and K classes to come to the station and watch a fire prevention movie and spend some time with a fire fighter in full gear (most of them are afraid of us). And brand new this year myself and my fellow female firefighter have created a Doll house of hazards that has mini fire hazards for the kids to spot out!

now that sounds like a well planned event, the kids ought to be looking foward to that

Yes me and my partner are more excited about this then the kids most likely! We are having a lot of fun painting and decorating the house!

Our department visits the local elementary school, the library, and most of the daycares and preschools. The kindergarten and some of the preschools actually visit the station. We also have a parade on Saturday night that ends with a BBQ dinner for all the participants.
As an "All Volunteer" FD we have taken turns arriving at the 3 schools in our district. The "Engine", "Rescue" "Tender" and "Service/Ladder" trucks arrive at a time determined by the school staff. All the students get a look at the trucks, climb up in the cabs and like all children, are just aglow when that part is over. We have a little "Sparky the Fire Dog" robot that is remote controlled and it wheels around to a pre-determined classroom with the handouts about fire prevention in his basket. The FF with him gives a little presentation and Sparky rolls around the room and each student takes a packet from the basket. At the end of that tour Sparky shoots out a little squirt of water and the soto voice gives one of 4 or 5 pre-recorded messages. I think it is a really great way to teach children about the hazards of fire and lets them know what the fire department is capable of with their help.
My Station has two schools to do drill in, the department does our school fire drills this month. They are also doing a demonstration of rooms burning, live burn. Inviting the press and politicos. Other than that not much. No money, cuts every year. Fire prevention is being cut two people again, we are losing 14 firefighters as well. We lost 27 in 2005 including 2 fire prevention inspectors.
Actually it went quite well we also had some demenstrations of a dryer and oven fire, a MVA car cut and our explorers put on gear and handed out lollipops as well as allowed the kids to try on the gear!
