TRENTON, N.J. - A three-alarm house fire claimed the life of one child while firefighters saved three others early Thursday morning in Trenton.

The fire broke out around 12:15 a.m. on Vine Street. Officials say four children were inside the house with what they believe to be the children's mother.

The woman jumped out of the window.

Fire crews were able to save three of the four children. Officials said one of those children was inside the burning house for two hours before being rescued.

"One of the battalion chiefs, Chief John Gribbin, just had some type of instinct," the fire chief said. "He went and looked in the basement window, and he saw the kid. It was actually a miracle. He was treading water in the basement. So, we actually had a rescue crew together, went down in the basement, got the kid up. He was breathing, he was conscious. And it's just a success story of an unfortunate tragedy."

One firefighter was also taken to the hospital. He was experiencing chest pains.
