Well i was at the station today when a new guy who just joined the department came up to me and one of my buddies showing us these golf balls he was saying that if he gets lost in a fire like in a church or a big warehouse he could toss the golf balls to see which wall was closer now i know it might sound like a good idea but i just never herd of this before now the new guy might be teaching me new tricks but just seems odd to carry around 12 golf balls in your turnout gear lol please tell me what you think
A golf-ball-sized hole in a high rise window for ventilation??
That's not going to work for several reasons, starting with the heavy glass used in high rise structures. That glass is designed to withstand wind loads at much higher forces than a thrown golf ball will generate.
Second, even if it worked, the ventilation hole would be too small to make any difference.
Third, a golf ball falling from a great height can seriously injure or even kill anyone on which it lands, depending on the height from which the golf ball is thrown.
More likely, if you're lost in a big-box structure, throwing golf balls will resort in the balls bouncing around on shelves full of products for sale. That will just confuse the firefighter even farther.
Worse, it wastes time and air on a solution that is unlikely to work and it will likely reduce the firefighter's chances of survival.
