Need Ideas when it comes to taking Vol depts and staffing them for day shifts

My area Onslow County is going though the process of trying to fix the problem of how little we have day time responders this project was awarded about 5 hundread thousand and some odd dollars. This project has been under works for sometime now and July 12 the commity will be taking ideas to the meeting and by the end of the week will know what they are doing... Please give me some ideas and thoughts on putting paid staff for day time shifts in Vol fire departments, have any of you already went though this? I know some countys have and are in the same boat as we are. What are your thoughts on how bringing our responses for day time up in our county and how it will affects us. I do have a lot of ideas on our own but I think with all my fellow firefighters thinking together this will help come up with a great idea to bring to them

FF Cranford:
You were awarded a half a million dollars for a project that wasn't outlined in your application for the grant?
How did you get the grant without giving a detailed description on how the money would be spent?
Is it a SAFER grant?
Whatever you do there will require incentives for the people manning shifts. POC is probably the easiest route now and then from there look at full time.
And like Jack, I looked at your profile. Anyone who has been a member here for a while does it.
And in some discussions, it DOES make a difference. You could have handled Jack's question differently.

Our department is combination and has been for a number of years. During the day like everyone else we are hard pressed for volunteers to make responses. We have a paid duty crew for daytime coverage from 6a-6p, and normally have about 6-7 personnel daily for fire apparatus , 4-5 for engine, 1 for tanker, and Chief officer. We also provide 24/7 EMS coverage which includes another 2-4 personnel most are firefighters also. We also alternate which apparatus is used to ensure that all of the apparatus gets operated regularly.

When we started the paid personnel we had 3-4 employees and would take the apparatus needed either an ambulance, fire apparatus or both. As the call volume and the available monies increased we added additional personnel over the past several years.
