Kansas Firefighter Dies After Battling House Fire
SHAWNEE, Kan.
A suburban Kansas City firefighter has died while searching a burning home.

The Kansas City Star reported that the name of the six-year veteran has not been released.
Neighbors told firefighters who responded to the Saturday night fire that there could be two people and a dog inside the Shawnee home. A short time later, the fire scene commander radioed that a firefighter was missing.
The missing firefighter was not response when he was found. The husband and father of two was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A second firefighter was treated and released from a hospital.
Firefighters later learned nobody had been in the home. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

What a tragedy. My heart goes out to his wife and family and to his fire fighter family. What a terrible loss of a good man. The fire department was notified of this fire by an automatic alarm, I read. I would assume this would indicate a full fire and security alarm system in the house. Therefore one would presume that when the homeowner left the house, he set the alarm on the door locks, and the alarm company would then know the homeowner was not home and had left. What a shame there seems to be no way for the fire department to get data from the alarm company such as whether the homeowner or person responsible seems to have left the building because the alarm has been set. Of course, there is always the possibility that someone could still be home, or that the homeowner set the alarm before going to bed in the house. But at least if there was a method whereby any data the alarm company has on occupancy could be given to the fire department in the case of a fire, it would hopefully cut down on these awful deaths and injuries by brave firefighters who go into buildings looking for people that in fact are not inside. My sincere sympathies to all concerned in this tragic loss.
