Hey, well i have to write a an editorial on an important topic. SInce i am a member of the Bagdad fire protection district junior program i chose the topic of juniors being pulled from school to go on calls. However i cant find really reliable information on the actual dept.'s that pull students from school so i need your help. I need:

statistics for how mant departments pull juniors from class

Regulations for what kind of call and if the time of the day makes a difference as to if they are pulled out of class

age limits on being pulled from class

if a drivers license is required to leave class

if missed work can be made up

excused absence?

if red/blue lights are given for personal vehicle use from school to a fire scene

what types of call they can respond to during school hours

and anything else you think might be relevant to my topic
Thank you so very much, stay safe
Jessica

Along with OSHA and NFPA, the BSA do not allow explorers ( or at least in the great state of New York) to enter a building that is a confirmed structure fire.
I know my school had an agreement with the local fire department that if you're a senior, a qualified firemen, and 18 years old you could go on calls only if your teacher allowed it and if you could make the work up that you missed. Now the department I'm at isnt in the area of the high school so my post isnt allowed to leave.
We, as JR's are NOT allowed to leave school or go on calls if we skip school for whatever reasons....We do not have a curfew at night, but I have heard of that...but we do not have that. We also are a small department but we can always call outside departments for manpower, so we can NOT leave school. I wish I could because the majority of our calls are during the day lol. I asked my chief about the reason why besides the whole grades issue, and he said that during school hours we are on SCHOOL INSURANCE, so if we get hurt, the fire dept is basicaly screwed.
No worries Mike, I understand the use for emphasis.

I wish I could say that it's people from canada et. al. but the sad fact is that there are a lot of departments in the US that actually do allow minors to participate on the fireground and NOT JUST AS SUPPORT.

There were a couple past discussions on this recently, which included an incident where a 16 year old was transported for heat exhaustion from working inside a fire. Another incident was the exploding dumpster/fire that killed one firefighter and 'dazed' another minor/junior.

Most of the comments about being allowed to work on the fireground in some 'firefighter' capacity come from junior/cadet/explorers in the US. Read through some of the discussions, it's both enlightening and frightening.
our jr members are never permitted to leave school for calls! The only way they get out of school is if the school is on fire and they have to stay with there class untill they either get to go back to class or its time to go home.
Gordon Hennigs
Okanogan Volunteer Fire Department has had a High School Program for about 10 years they have to be 16yrs old valid drivers license, maintain a 2.0gpa with no failing classes. They our allowed to respond day or night durning class as long as the teacher has signed a premission slip for them to leave. They our allowed to go on EMS, Structure fires first floor entry only no above or below grade entry and Wildland fires. We currently have 7 students in the program. They train once a week with the reqular fire crews. They may respond with a single green light non flashing and they our allowed to make up missed work.

Are you seriously a chief and actually advocating this BS? You realize you are promoting that CHILDREN can go inside a structure fire DESPITE the fact this goes against so many laws out there. Why are you advocating that CHILDREN be used as actual FF's? How is that a service to you community? How is that a service to other FF's? As a FF, I sure as hell don't want some FD responding mutual aid with a bunch of kids, because their chief thinks it is OK.

So why is this needed for you? Why do you advocate the fact that a kid number one leave their PRIMARY responsibilty (school), respond with lights (even a non flashing green light), go on calls and be utilized as FF's? Your community's leaders are fine with this BS? Who's fronting the insurance money and does the insurance company realize what you are allowing these kids to do?

Yes, I know I'm coming down harshly here, but for one of the few times it isn't some snot nosed kid with an entitlement mentality who thinks they should be able to play FF. This time it is an actual chief, or stated, someone who holds much more responsibility for advocating such decisions. Gordon, I sure hope you rethink this policy and leave the kids in school and the firefighting to actual adults.
I am floored by this.
I see so many issues with these policies.
1) 2.0 gpa is not a high enough gpa to be allowed to miss any school.
2) Children responding to fire calls (or medical etc). Children driving can be troublesome enough. Children driving, red mist, to a call can be deadly. All it takes is a look at the Secret List to see this.
3)First floor entry?? Shocking!!! Here's a scenario... basement fire, lightweight construction, actually that is all that really needs to be said, but I will continue anyhow; the dangers of the floor giving way with engineered floor systems is TREMENDOUS! Having any child in a fire in any way what so ever is very, very troublesome. These parents need to give their heads a shake and the department needs to be asked a few questions of their policies.

Such a long life to be fighting fires, why is there such a need to start at such a young age. It is a craft that can be learned at any point in life. If you cannot learn it quickly enough as an adult, then it is a job you should not be doing. No child NEEDS to be responding to calls, but they do NEED to stay in school and make that a priority until completed.

If you are depending on children, do a recruitment run, look for adults to work for your department. There has to be someone other than a 16 year old child.

I'm sorry, this was not meant to be rude, but I am simply astounded by this response. Safety and protection of our children should be of paramount importance, putting them into potentially very dangerous situations is not protecting them.
i was going to respond to this post yesterday but i was so mad i had to erase what i wrote due to fact i did not want my brothers mad at me it was in tense due to the fact i have 2 teenage boys in school myself

in no way do i think any chief worth his grain of salt should let any tweenie be pulled from school due too low-man power or what have you thats as far as i'm going
With our Jr firefighter program, we prohibit our jr's from answering calls while in school. It is of the utmost importance that they stay in school & do the best that they can. We even hold them to a grade standard...

1. A “C” average or better must be maintained in all subjects.
2. Any suspension form school will result in suspension from the program.
3. No one is allowed to leave school for fire calls or be at the station while school is in session
4. At the guardian’s request, a member may be suspended or terminated.
5. No one is allowed to run calls before 6 am or past 10 pm on any school night and not past 12 pm on weekends.

This may seem unfair to some or maybe even a little extreme, but they do well in school, in fact a few parents have mentioned that their kids have been doing better since they have joined our jr firefighter program.
Forgive my memory it's been 15 years since this affected me,so i may leave some info out.As I remember it here in town Jr.'s And Explorers(at the time) COULD LEAVE SCHOOL,But 1)It had to be deemed a "GENERAL ALARM FIRE" over the radio by the i.c. and requested that dispatch notify the school by phone to release us.Then the school would give an announcement over the p.a. system.AND USUALLY 17 & UP ONLY. 2)Half-Days and Snow Days where usually included in this, thus NO RESPONDING TO CALLS DURING "NORMAL SCHOOL HOURS",unless the situation rendered it necessary.Usually one of us would go to the hall and find out,is so we'd make phone calls from the hall or have it dispatched as "all available ff's and jr.'s report to your station to man your apparatus". 3) NO RESPONSE DURING EXAMS.Unless you did not have an exam that day. 4)Absent from school for what ever reason, you had better not show up at a call or fire hall at all. 5) ABSOLUTELY NO BLUE LIGHTS for the Jr.s,unless responding with a parent who holds membership in the department. 6)If You Quit School before the age of 18 you are automatically DROPPED FROM THE PROGRAM.

Again this is just what i can remember,an it may be a little different. But the clear thing was that SCHOOL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CALLS.
OH I almost forgot: If a Incident is still on going at the time of dismissal of school, said members may report to the fire hall after school has been let out for the day.
I remember this now, lol. But as i recall weekends where open until 9pm on school nights.
Our volunteer deparment and school is currently looking into allowing juniors to leave school. Our requirements would be to maintain a "B" average; atleast 16 years of age; Have written permission from parents(guardians), fire chief, principal, and only if it is our call. If we would be paged to assist a neighboring department we would have to await a second page.
