This discussion will NOT be closed (well...at least not by me) Respect... what you need... what you want....
Recognizing and accepting that (most especially) people in this profession tend to be strongly opinionated and have a wicked sense of humor, attempting to regulate humor and opinion, especially in the midst of a "conversation", is both presumptuous and dictatorial.
Towards that end, there is no off-topic discussion in this thread, so long as you can 'somehow' relate it back to respect. Take it where ever it goes, sarcasm is allowed. No...really.
You have my respect, you do not need to "earn" it, nor do I decide ahead of time who is deserving of my respect and who is not; you have my respect from the first instant I learn of you, meet you or correspond with you; respect is a basic human right we all deserve and we all owe to everyone else; it is freely given to all...
until YOU lose it through YOUR ACTIONS or WORDS.
You lose my respect when you are racist, sexist, or are otherwise a bigot towards others; you lose my respect when you make your respect contingent upon meeting your idea of pre-requisites to be respected; you lose my respect when you claim to be something you are not; you lose my respect when you are a hypocrite.
Aretha wasn't saying, "respect me because I have earned your respect;" she was saying, "Respect me because I am a Human Being."
Respect isn't earned, cannot be earned, it can only be lost.
The main reason for this discussion originally was because of the practice of the WC, as well as others, deleting their (or other's) posts simply because they did not like what was being written,
In the discussions deleted by the OP it was because they thought, and expected, everyone to simply agree with them, and when they found out that that was not (nor ever would be) the case, they would close the discussion to comments, or delete comments, or delete their own discussion.
Kind of like what someone did today with their discussion: DUE TO THE ARUGEMENTS ON THIS POST. THIS DISCUSION WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH THE TOPIC, DON'T WRITE ON IT. SIMPLE AS THAT. IF I DECIDE TO RE-OPEN DISCUSSION AND THE ARGUING RESUMES, THEN YOU WILL BE REPORTED AND THE DISCUSSION WILL BE DELETED.
Clearly this person does NOT understand what a discussion is. It is NOT something where everyone chimes in saying the same thing and agreeing with everything. It IS about facts, interpretations and opinions, where many people have many different ideas, thoughts and comments to make.
I would suggest that if you want to post your thoughts, feelings, beliefs etc and NOT be challenged or contradicted, the you should START YOUR OWN GROUP, restrict who can join (by invite only, etc), closely monitor your group discussions and MAKE SURE THEY REFLECT YOUR OWN PERSONAL VIEWPOINT, OPINION OR BELIEF. This way, you won't be challenged to have to defend your beliefs, etc, and everyone will simply nod their head and agree with everything you say.
How do people who delete discussions due to challenging statements, deal with real life discussions where they can't simply delete the person in front of them. Do they curl up and cry? Do they turn and walk away? Just goes to show that many people have different personalities when they are on the computer vs. face to face.
Maybe it might be a good idea to filter the things that might leave room for opposing comments if it makes the poster uncomfortable.
I really find it hard to have respect for someone who can't defend their own beliefs or fight for what they feel is right. If you say or write it, be prepared to discuss it because not everyone will agree with you, as we have all seen repeatedly.
I'll finish now, for it seems I am only repeating what many have already been saying.
Still a great post Jack.
