Interesting Security Concerns for Digital Copier Users

Every fire department uses a digital copier as a way of doing business. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the copying machine. We all make numerous copies of information that may contain personal information, that could include your arson divisions case reports and other criminal records before shipping them to the DA’s office. This does not even go into potential HIPPA violations should confidential information be compromised.

Used Digital Photocopy Machines, Ready for Sale...

How many of you would believe that a Copying Machine would need a hard drive similar to what you have in your computers? I have always assumed that when you placed a document into a Copying Machine, the scan would be transferred directly to the copy paper. Not so and this has interesting ramifications as described in the attached video of a CBS investigation.

I found and forwarded this to my administration last week. This could be an expensive lesson for anyone involved in patient care records, especially if they are copied under court order.

• Digital scanners built >2000 all have on board HD for information storage.
