Recently I sustained a pretty significant leg injury. (broken fibula, deltoid ligament damage) the long and short of it is I'm out of commission for at least 3 months. In this time, I've decided to work on some of my knowledge of the fire service and one of the things I could use improvement on is knowing types and classifications of building construction.

Any of you folks happen to know any websites or training aids I could use?

There is a really good booklet, on Truss Construction (NIOSH ALERT) put out by CDC/NIOSH called
"Preventing Injuries and Deaths of Fire Fighters due to Truss System Failure."

It can be ordered from CDC/NIOSH from the below address. It is available online at the web address as a PDF download, go to the search and type in Truss Failure it is the first choice on the possible answers.

If you can't get it from them let me know I have a few copies left from when I last ordered.

Hope you heal quickly.
Buy "Building Construction for the Fire Service" by Frank Brannigan.

When you are able to get around, take a ride around your community and look at the construction of new and existing buildings.
You can find a lot of information just by using Google.

Here's a couple of items I found a while back just by using Google.

http://www.fireserviceslt.com/files/Acting_Officer_Building_Constru...

http://www.fireserviceslt.com/files/Building_Construction_Introduct...

http://www.fireserviceslt.com/files/What_sInYourArea.ppt

And there's much more out there if you search.
ADAM IF YOU ARE OUT OF COMMISSION FOR A BIT(SORRY ABOUT THE INJURY)...yOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE SOME FORMAL CLASSES...IF YOUR sTATE DOESN'T OFFER ANY NY STATE DOES AT MONTOUR FALLS(STATE FIRE ACADEMY)..THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THE COURSES AND IF YOU WANT TO STAY THERE IT IS VERY CHEAP WITH MEALS INCLUDED...THEY HAVE SEVERAL CLASSES THA WILL FIT YOUR DESIRES....GOOD LUCK......OOPS CAPS ARE LOCKED....SORRY.......PAUL
If you go to bookstores like Barnes and Noble I know they have building construction books...believe me Ive looked into them and they are amazing! :)
Thanks for the suggestion Paul, unfortunately, I've got to keep my leg elevated, so formal classes are out for a little while. But once I'm mobile, I'll be looking through that.

Also thanks everyone for the get well wishes and all the information.
As long as you can get to Montour Falls the Academy will just about bend over backwards ( no pun intended) to accommodate any special needs you might have.
Adam, Send me your email address and I'll send you some powerpoints on bldg const. to dubree.douglas@rigov.org
