I'm 22 years old, and just got thrown into the fire of being an officer of a small rescue squad. I know this forum is more towards Firefighters, and my squad is only EMS/Rescue, but hopefully someone can help.

Of course, being so young and jumping so high in rank in a day (our rank goes Duty Sgt, 1st Sgt, Lt, Captain, Asst. Chief, Chief) I have to admit I almost did get a big head about myself. I'm also senior EMT on the night shift, so that is more responsibility.

What I am asking, what does it take to be a good officer and not come off as too soft on the staff or too much of an asshole?

All thoughts, questions, comments, and advice is very much appriciated.

Go to www.fireemsblogs.com.
There are some excellent senior EMTs with blogs geared towards EMS training.
Treat your staff like you want to be treated. Sometimes you have to put friendship aside and be a boss.
Let everyone know that you expect them to perform as professionals and do things by the book. Use progressive (three step) discipline. Make it clear that you are still friends, but not "just their friend" any more. You'll do great!
