amazing....title a post "training" and it is like the real thing.....No one shows up......LOL
hahahahaha that is funny. You should have titled it Beer and chicken Wings. You may even get funding from KFC for the posting. :) Anywho, I have not completed the IFSAC Course. I have attended many trainings and leadership conferences. You are very right, there is so much an officer needs to know. It can be mind numbing sometimes.
There have been a few times when I have found myself going, REALLY? It is all about accountability. When the music finally stops it is the guy (or gal) in the white hat that needs to do the explaining of why.
I wish you much luck in your new endevour. You are obviously headed in the right direction for what you need to accomplish it.
In our department Intro to Fire Officer is required for chief officers. I thought it was an excellent course and I learned a lot from it.

One particular exercise in communications showing the difference between radio and face-to-face communications, was priceless.
Thanks guys....I felt like "What the hell am I getting into" in the early part of the course...but, getting a little more "comfortable" for the lack of a better word.....
Joe-
Could you expand on this exercise. I am always looking for new concepts.
I'm not an officer, but I do have the certification. I attended the same type of class you are and I thought it was a great experience even for a firefighter. It is because of the course I sense I have some better insight as to reasonings for some tactics, you take a step back and do a quick sizeup instead of just doing grunt work, you learn about communication issues, not just on the fireground. I found the training invaluable and do think anyone thinking of being an officer should look into it. The nice thing about doing this as an open enrollment (not through a dept) is you learned from other's perspectives and learned different considerations that you don't always get in a dept locked course.
Cap, the exercise went something like this:

The object was to describe a drawing to the class so each student could replicate it from verbal instructions.

The first person to try to describe it had to do it from behind a screen, and no one could ask any questions. Result was many fantastic drawings, none of which remotely resembled the original.

The second person stood in front of the class, described it with gestures and the class could ask for clarification. THe combination of hand gestures, etc. and the ability to ask questions resulted in almost everyone getting the drawing right.

That's the gist of it anyways. Maybe Paul can clarify since he either has gone through the exercise or will soon.
Oh great Joe....something else to look forward to LOL.....we had a class in which we had to give instructions on performing simple tasks (simple till you tried to explain it) We picked them out of a hat....Mine was teaching someone to tie their shoes...try it with no hands on or questions.....LOL
EXCELLENT! I am going to try that out on this new EMT class that I am teaching.
Paul, been there done that. Easier said then done. Especially when you are trying to describe this from your perspective forgetting that it is the opposite from what they are looking at.I was actually attempting to describe this and show them and I choked. Couldnt do it. Cracked me up. LOL!
neither could I.....LOL
