I'll answer your second question first....Yes.

We tour certain facilities in our town once a year. Inspect the buildings for the following

1) Hazards: This includes building construction, utilities, and special concerns
2) Fire Flow calculation: Measure length x width and divide by 3. This formula will give you the required fire flow for 100% of one floor involved in fire
3) Draw a map and or take pictures of the building.

It REALLY isn't hard to do a decent size area. We did our local ski area in about an hour. Its not Vail...but we covered it.

Inspections are done on a company level for all businesses and public buildings. Larger structures and schools are conducted by our fire prevention division officers. During inspections we look for hazards, egress routes, extinguishers updated and serviced, alarm systems, sprinklers, electrical shutoff etc. It also helps to get companies into buildings to help with familiarization. Preplans are done weekly by each station. We have a preplan Friday where you pick a building to preplan and info obtained from inspections does go along with that.

Official inspections are done by our Borough Manager, info is then shared with us. Preplanning and non-official/familiarization visits are done on a regular basis throughout the year. If we notice something though, we do bring it to the attention of the occupant and the Borough Manager.

98% of our coverage area are SFD. We have a couple large businesses that we do a yearly tour of. We check for things like hazards, egress routes, electrical points of interest. Weknow that one place has a backup generator. So if the power gets shut off, the gen. will run. WE will need to shut that down as well. We don't give reports, not our thing. But we do make recommendations. As for the homes, we have zone lieut. who every once in a while knocks on a neighbors door to see how the place is doing. We' have potentiallyprevented a good number of fires doing that.
Actual inspections are done by the county fire marshall.

We do inspections of all businesses, schools, and hotel/motels. Some may be part of pre-planning. Some may not. Just depends on the location and what the occupancy is.
