Mostly I don't get the point of the question. What does it matter what another department does or does not allow. It's your department's policies that you have to abide by. But it's clear that most adults in here think the answer is no, or in only the most stringently limited capacity.
Most firefighters started their career by getting hired and going to the academy. I doubt there are any shortcomings in their abilities by having NOT been explorers. I suspect that if most explorers/juniors put the same amount of time and energy into school that they appear to do on this site and at their departments they would all be honor students. There's a time and a place for everything, and the fireground is a place for adults.
As to explorers running calls, when it comes to my state we have strict guide lines that state what we can and cant do and what time we can respond. Responding to calls gives explorers the oppertunity to experience hands on what goes on on a scene. When I went on my first fire I stayed at the rehab area and left when instructed to do so due to time being up when we can be on scene. As to what explorers do I believe it should be up to the state labor agency and the department
To all the explores out there you think you have it bad because you can't do anything or what ever your complaining about. Well what about joining a fire department and being able to do stuff like fight fire if you have the training. And then one day your chief says at a meeting one night that the state of NC is passing a law where Jr. FF's are restricted majorly. I have a link to the restrictions So all together try imagining your self being able to "do stuff" and then all the sudden to nothing pretty much. Well that was me 1 year ago matter in fact yesterday day the 1st. I got so tore out of the frame that I almost quit because I felt so worthless. But I didn't, I grew up and realized the strong desire that I had and that I couldn't just let the trucks scream by my house. I also understood the purposes of the law and did what i could to get by with for a year. So now complain...
that got to be rough for you guys. some of this stuff i in connecticut have to deal with and it seriously restricts us in a way that discourages us. yes it is for our safety but not riding in the cab of a truck going to a call, how do we get there? I share your confusion and say the restrictions must be looser

Juniors/explorers, read about the recent Wisconsin LODD and the multiple injuries. Guess who a couple of the injuries were? I, and many others on this site, have no problem with a department having a junior or explorer program... teaching and training in house, or in a controlled training environment, but this is exactly why you should not be going on any calls.
Our explorers are allowed to ride on apparatus and are issued turn out gear, but are not allowed to participate in any fireground activities. They are there to observe only.
