I have been watching some of the postings on here by the less than literate junior members lately. I have also seen some of the "I want to be a firefighter types" post some ridiculous things on here. These discussions inevitably turn into the "learn to spell" or "shut-up and learn" conversations. I am not saying I have not participated in them either. But, is there some way to limit the posting capabilities of members? What if the junior members were only able to post in the junior area? Or, what if they were not allowed on here at all? I am sure that they can figure out a way to get around any sort of age requirement for membership, they are a little smarter than that. But, if they start posting immature crap, turn off their capability to post at all. They can still learn an awful lot with a read-only account.
The people who run this site have been or are currently firefighters. Obviously, they also have expertise in web design.
You want to maximize your product and reach the largest audience that you can.
I think that they have done a great job with spam and non-public safety people attempting to come here to sell a product. They have also been removing plagiarized material.
I have to believe that discussion topics generate alot of use among users but does not generate revenue. For all of the intensity that can come from the latest helmet color thread, I don't think this is where the sponsors believe that they will get their exposure.
If I am running a business, I want the most money spent where I can get my greatest return. I would look at discussions like research and development; it's necessary to further the business, but you don't make money on R & D. It is an expense.
My point is that the reason we don't see a change at the discussion level is because in the larger scheme of things, it doesn't pay the bills. Look around at any of the others: Firehouse, FireEngineering,WatchDesk and on and on. They have the same issues with the younguns. But giving members the option of leaving if they don't like it is not the answer. I think that the website owners would want to know what is important to its users, maybe poll a percentage of the users and resolve a problem. I am not comfortable with someone telling me what is best for me. I know what I like and dislike. I know what interests me and what doesn't. And I definitely know what brings me back to a website and it isn't junior/explorer pablum. When one of them can provide me with a teachable moment, I will grab it with gusto, but until they can, I would suggest that they take what WE can teach THEM.
My opinion and mine alone.

On the othr hand //i have met some adult members that I would not want coming in to a house to pull me out or rendering medical aid to me.
That is an ignorant statement.
In addition, you are not qualified to assess the skill level of firefighters.
I don't care if your mom, while still carrying you before you were born was hanging out of the fire station and you have been there every day since then.
At 15, you have not earned the right nor the privilege to assert such strong opinions on subject matter that is beyond your level of knowledge.
They call you "Batman" because of all of the tools that you carry?

Way to help the cause Benny Boy! Why don't you just keep planning on what lights you are going to put in your car, or better yet, focus more on school. This is why the senior guys look down on juniors. If a junior would actually ask questions about the job then all would be cool. But instead, most, not all, want to talk about the pretty lights, fire truck colors, and helmet colors. It seems as if the juniors are more concerned with playing with the lights and sirens than they are about actually doing the job. It's like I said earlier, I have 14 yrs in the service. Back when I was a junior, I didn't have time to worry about what kind of lights I'm gonna put on my car because I had to keep my grades up to even be a junior. That mixed in with being on the cross country team, I didn't have much spare time.
Yes, I could go on calls. Only on the tanker and as long as I wasn't taking the spot of a senior firefighter. But the thing that got beat into my head time and time again was school, school, and school.
No one would blame the actions of a few on the whole group if it were just a few. It is happening more and more and, like what has been said, is becoming more like facebook than a site to learn and share ideas.

Like you said it is my opinion, just as that was your opinion. I respect your opinion so I ask that you please respect mine. People are so quick to think people of my age group are stupider than we actually are. When in reality we are smarter than you think. Explorers/juniors are held to as high of a standard as the members where i come from. So I think we should have the same rights and privilages of these members.
Ben, your opinion isn't worth the efforts of the electrons to transmit them. You are a child. Moreover you have no right to take any adult to task. You are a child. Given your (and others) examples I would seriously challenge the your statement that you all are smarter than we think. Why is that? Because you are a child.
I seriously doubt that your department considers a 15 year old to have the same rights and privileges as does an adult. You have a key to your station? Can you show up there whenever you want? Are you allowed to be there late at night? On your own? Do you have voting privileges in your department? Can you run for officer? Can you show up on scene as opposed to going to the station?
At this point all I can say is, get over yourself. This is not high school where the teachers are there to comfort and guide you. This is the real world (albeit on line) and there's a reason that children are not allowed to socialize with adults. Any idea why that is? Because you're a child.
One second after midnight on your 18th birthday, by an act of congress you will be an adult, with all the rights and privileges so allowed. But not a second before. As for your department, I think you say it best, "I don't know why people look down on juniors. I get it at the firehouse..." You get it and so seemingly do a lot of other juniors. Have you got a clue yet why that is, why you get looked down at? Could it be because you are a child?
Jack, Do you feel like you just wasted some good time trying to make a reply to someone who just up and deleted their post?
Seems Ben, started another discussion in which I wasted some time replying to, only to see him delete the thread. This is another reason juniors are looked down upon, many can't take the criticism, even if it is constructive and helpful.
I felt that if i kept the thread up it would cause problems. As to the stuff people said, some yes i do take it as constructive and thank them for that.
John, yes I noticed that too. While some adults have also done that as well, it's a sign of maturity to stand by one's remarks, for better or for worse. After all, if you yourself don't have any faith in what you've said how then can anyone else.
I got an email alert that said young Batman deleted a post.
I was posting a new blog "When the Dream Turns to Nightmare".
Did young Ben get upset and say something he shouldn't have?
Did I miss something?
Art,
Just a post wherein he took us (those that rank on the juniors) to task for doing so. While it was rather (and surprisingly) well writen, it seems that he felt that we were being a btt unfair and strong handed in our replies.
But...consistency being important, he subsequently deleted some of his replies in this present post as well. Looks like the new year in here is off to a rocking good start.
