I have always enjoyed volunteering and I love being able to make a difference, so I volunteered for Mineral County Search and Rescue. Since Superior is a small town, many of the members of Search and Rescue are also members of the Rural Fire Dept. and several of them convinced me to join! I am very glad i did, I have made some wonderful friends and learned so many new things. What's funny was everyone told me I couldn't do it because i am too girly... i always love a challenge... Sure showed them LOL ;oP

I became a firefighter because of my dad. I was living in a very small town in Eastern oregon, and they needed voluneeters but no one in town wanted to join so i did, I took my firefighting classes and passed. I was the only woman firefighter in the Morrow county. In eastern oregon you didn't find any lady firefighters then, I now know of a lady cheif in eastern oregon which is great. Every fire department I have been on was all men. I got along with them all. I left Oregon 6 years ago to come to Montana with my husband which was also a firefighter back in the early 80's. He's older than me but hey. But my dad was the bigggest infulence of becoming a firefighter.
I became a firefighter cause the fact i can help the community and get to work with kids im now the fire prevention officer for libby fire dept. That is a blast with the kids . Kids where me out when I bring the ladder truck I bet i climb it 20 times but any how its just a good community thing to do and the fact ive always wanted to be a firefighter.
I became a firefighter to help people and I was worried that I was also too girly, but I think that I have stepped up to the challenge and do quite well. I also have another challenge, but I can deal with that too and besides, SHORT (under 5') PEOPLE ROCK!!! And like you I have met some great people.
I got into the department sort of sideways... I'd been helping with the PA system, and my firefighter friends were surrounding me at our Fourth of July Community Picnic. One of them leaned over to me and quietly said, "So, when you gonna join up... "
I showed up for the next training day, filled out the paperwork over the next couple of months and got busy installing the new repeater, working on trucks and making myself useful...
Playing rhythm guitar (and a little lead) and doing the occasional vocal number in our mostly Fire Department band doesn't hurt either...
Superior might just be close enough that you'd enjoy coming up for one of our music parties...
We have a terrific time and there's always more food than we can eat in one night

We have a terrific time, make some pretty good music, and there's always more food than we can eat in one night
