Thought I would see what other books and authors people enjoy. I read allot, 1000 to 1500 page books usally last a week or less, so I'm allways looking for new authors. I read just about every kind of book. Here are some of my favorite authors. Nelson DeMille (movie The Generals Daughter was based on one of his books) Richard Herman, Mack Maloney, Dennis McKiernan, Terry Goodkind, John Sandford, Dean Koontz, Stephen King.

I like stories of historic fires; I just finished the book about the Worcester Cold Storage fire. Aside from fire-related material, I like anything by James Herriot (the veterinarian from England).

Reading, a great pastime! I've read a lot over the years, though less now than I have in the past (this damned computer!).
History about wars, historical novels. Sci Fi I used to love, but we've invented most of the things that would be spoken about in the old novels so a bit boring now for modern novels! Russel? I'm with you on the James Herriot novels. Novels, but based solidly on fact as he was a Vet in northern England for time he wrote about. Terry Pratchet is another one for me. I also enjoy the Harry Potter series.
Fire is a topic that I don't read much about, though I have one in front of me now titled "Black Saturday" - "Stories of love, loss and courage from the Victorian bushfires". Being involved in something, seeing things at first hand, yet reading about them later. Part of the healing process really. Just as my father always read everything he could find about WW2.

I just finished the book "Pride and Ownership:A Firefighters Love of the Job" by Rick Lasky. Excellent read!! If you want to get inspired about the fire service and how YOU can make it better, read this book. I am currently reading "First In, Last Out-Leadership Lessons from The New York Fire Department" by John Salka. Both of these are filled with great info from great leaders and instructors, been through both of their FDIC classes. I also read Fire Engineering constantly and other fire periodicals, and my banjo magazines. Oh, and the best and most important-BIBLE.

I'm going to look into the ones that do the WW2 books, I enjoy history and havnt found any good authors that write about it.
Chap, I enjoyed John Salka's book myself. For anyone thats interested some great leadership books also ar Fred Factor, Servant leadership and QBQ Question Behind the Question.
And I agree with you, the Bible should always be read.

Have a look at ONE FOOT IN THE BLACK, a coming of age story about a kid from Michigan who becomes a man as a wildland firefighter in SoCal.

Couldn't agree more. 485 is a great read. Michael Perry is a great writer! Currently reading Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean.
