My department keeps a copy of our preplans on each engine. They're outdated, unorganized, and not useful. I'm hoping to redo them.

Our district is small, ~300-350 homes. We don't need anything too elaborate. We don't have a dispatcher so anything we'd call for would have to come from the binder. What do you use as far as district maps, hydrant locations and other information. Does anyone know of a free GIS program that I could use to generate these maps? What else should the preplans contain?

Thanks!

Paul,
E-mail me at ditchdoc1@bellsouth.net and I'd be happy to send you a simple form of what we use.
We have preplans for most of the non-residential buildings in our area, but not private residences. We have a sketch of the building and interior floor plans where possible; utility locations, hazardous material locations/types, other hazard areas, and so on. There are also apparatus placement drawings for reference only since daytime shortages may preclude all apparatus from showing up.

We also list mutual aid companies in order of proximity for additional mutual aid requests.

Our county has a GIS (government information system) mapping web site that has surveys and tax maps on line. They are a great resource. I use a program called Corel Draw for our preplans but it's a real pain to use.
Talk to your county planning department or county fire coordinator. They have a world of resources available and may be able to do up something specific. You also may be able to work with your water purveyor -- they may already have it.
