California Firefighters Burned at Plane Crash
OROVILLE, Calif. - Two Oroville firefighters were burned Friday after they responded to an emergency landing by a small plane and the aircraft's fuel tank exploded.
The firefighters were being taken to the University of California, Davis burn center in Sacramento, one by ambulance and the other by helicopter.
Rick Walls, interim manager for the Oroville Municipal Airport about 70 miles north of Sacramento, said the two people who were in the plane escaped with minor injuries. He said the plane crash-landed on an airport taxi-way.
Oroville Fire Chief Charles Hurley said two of his men were putting out a fire on the plane when fuel "exploded and ignited and it spilled all over the firefighters."
The firefighter who was being airlifted to the Sacramento burn center had moderate to serious burns to his head and face, Hurley said. The firefighter who was being taken by ambulance had minor burns to his ear and the side of his head.
Hurley would not give the firefighters' names or ages because relatives had not been notified.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the single-engine Piper Cherokee had just taken off when it developed engine problems. The pilot tried to return to the airport, "but the aircraft crashed and burned short of the runway," Gregor said.
A man and a woman on the plane were treated at the scene. Their identities were not immediately available.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

My heart goes out to the firefighters and family. And having to work as burn unit nurse, I know their jobs are the toughest on the planet. Happy to hear they are still with us.
