I'm not sure about all the rules/laws regarding flying flags at half staff, however; I think it would be a simple, yet very respectful thing for all FD's to fly their flag at half staff whenever there is a LODD.
As far as I know, only the state governor can declare when to fly flags at half-staff. Is this true?
Is there a way to fly a flag at half-staff without your governor's permission?
What do you think about flying flags at half staff for LODD'S?
When we had our LODD we lowered our flags right away we did not wait for the governors permission on that, we would of still been waiting on that if it was up to her. I believe it is out of respect for our fallen brother or sister. I have only dealt with this once i am not sure about how our department handles it with any other LODD's.

Sad part is many departments are run by the city or town manager, (remember fire chiefs have bosses too) We have been ordered to lower the flag to half mast for a past city constituent who died of old age but would not be allowed for a LODD in another department or state...
