I am wondering what you all thought about a few things.

1) Should Felons be allowed to be Firefighters?
2) Does your fire department hire felons?
3) If you are a firefighter and you are convicted of a felony, should you be fired?

The reason why I bring this up is because I got an email recently about Richmond (VA) Fire Department hiring.

Apparently, they have dropped the requirements for employment:

* Have no felony convictions for any offense within 60 months preceding the date of application;

I got the information here

I cannot speak for the department if this was an actual drop in requirement or if it has always been this way.

I thought that if you were a felon, you were always a felon. The only way to get a felony off your record is to have the Courts expunge it from your record.

What do you all think?

I don't live in Connecticut, but I am having one hell of a time vacationing here. I could see myself living here in the summer, definitely not the winter though.
Tax dollars also pay the street dept., water, park, and all the other city employees and they are not held to that higher standard . So the tax dollar veiw is no good .
no felons should not be allowed to be firefighters and no our fire department does not hire felons
Lets cut to the meat of the matter.....NO. Paul
I like that one....very clever....But, wait, I don't know a damnthing.......Wait a minute....yes, now I do.....LOL..... Hang in there Brother....Stay safe......Paul
thanks yah spelling is not my strong suet here
I think every one has lost the point of being young and influenced by our peers or other circumstances in ones life. In one word i want to sum it up SHIT HAPPENS. What like you have never done any thing wrong any of you. Every one here on this sight and reading this has some kinda of skeleton in there closet. Yes i have committed a felony no i am not proud of it i spent 5 years in prison for it. i done my time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I an time of war I have found that my fellow citizens who are felon free don't want to step up to the challenge especially after 9/11 let alone be a ff. My dream was always to become a ff i know i messed that up however, I joined theMarinesWhen others would not step up to the show. Now Most of you are saying i am not even worthy of being a ff WTF. Its OK that i put my life on the line for others freedom but i cant fight fire i can Cary a gun shoot people take a bullet. Some of you have a messed up way of showing your thanks for your family being safe.I mean think Did you put your life on the Front line watch your buddy's Die in your arms? Some of you yea maybe but most of you i bet not. Yea being a ff is one thing but not in combat its something very different.
Yea i messed up in my past but dose that mean i am not as good as you? WTF i mean relay relay I don't think so. Walk a Mile in my shoes and i think you would have a nervous brake down. So the bottom line is I am not as good as you guys RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! WRONG.... Yes People make mistakes get use to it.
Yes people in my squad was upset that I had a felony but they got over it when it comes down to it they have my back and i have theirs. Whats it matter if they can perform there job. That is all it comes down too.
I can tell just by reading these bulletins that some of you have been in this position and most of you have never put your life there where it didn't matter who he was or what his past was just that can he do his job. I think you should think about this! In the end dose it rely matter if the guy next to you has a past or not in the end he is depending on you just as you are of him. that is that nothing else matters. I do know this in my experience i would rather bee with one who has a past than one who dose not. Because most of the time we are trying to live it down and would walk through hell to make it go away. Its those who want to be ff and shoulders that make the difference because they have been in hell and want so hard to change the past or live down what they have done. People change its those who don't want to step up when there community needs them the most or there country. Did you? I know you will say yes because your a ff but, Did you enlist for cretin death. MUUUMMMM i think most of you didn't and wouldn't.

So for all of you who think your better than me!!!!!! how many bullets did you take for those who don't think you are good enough to be a ff. Me i have i think i have earned the right but because of you Argonaut assholes. I am not good enough but i hope you sleep well at night with your family safe. However you should know this Felons are keeping your family safe while you do nothing. Get in the game or SHUT UP AND GIVE US SOME RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is so easy now days to get a felony charge and conviction over the smallest thing it seems. I will have to say it depends on what the charge(s) and conviction were for and the person. Our department(volunteer) has a couple of felons on it, does it make our department a bad department-no. We do not hold it against them. I trust these men with my life every time we have a call. I also trust these men in my day to day life. They made a mistake, paid for it and are trying to get on with their lives.
If you're taxpayers are good with it, then fine, but do they know that you have felons on the fire department? Did they commit before they joined or after?
Just so I am clear on this: getting into trouble is one thing...committing a felony is quite different. If it isn't "so bad", then why wasn't it a misdemeanor?
And if I appear to be "holier than thou", I have to be. I am president of our fire district board and as long as I am, we will not allow convicted felons to join. Again; it is a privilege; not a right.
And that is regardless of your background, previous accomplishments or the here and now.
You break the law that constitutes a felony crime, you will not be allowed to join or to remain on our fire department.
Period.

I saw an article in Firehouse magazine a few years ago about a women's prison in Georgia or maybe it was in Alabama..anyway-when the women are 18 months or so short of getting out they could become volunteer member of the prison fire department as a trustee .They do respond outside of the prison to fires in that county .It is a program that has worked and has been around for years at that prison .They do a great service to the area and have made the difference at fires and have saved lives as well. I thought it was a great article -in that it shows people are given a second chance to prove they can be a good citizen, and they can be trusted . OLDDOGG@firehousemail.com
