Do all the guys in your department just sit around the station and talk and take bets about the next call? ....does any one have any good stories about this or other things like this?

that is very true!-- there is one captain thwt we constantly pick on. evry one has their own little thing that they get picked on about and some morer than others but its always fun! im a probie so i get a good dose of it myself and grew up with all the guys so that just makes it ten times better
Have they sent you to another neighboring department for some "siren oil" yet...? LOL....or the old Koolaid packets in fireboots.....esp blue....LOL...stains not only socks but the skin as well...we have had a few "pappa smurfs" roaming around at times.....Paul
Yeah, those types of meetings are never fun. I hope it goes well!

Maybe some ideas:

1. Get the camera/TV second hand... much cheaper that way. Small TVs at Goodwill or Salvation Army are not bad at all. Ask for a donation of an old TV/camera.
2. Use disposable cameras (I keep one in my turn-outs for taking my own photos and I don't care all that much if it gets broken, because it was just a few bucks)
3. Borrow a digital camera from someone else, perhaps someone attached to the dept. but not a firefighter who could be on-scene, take photos with their camera, and then download them on a station computer or something.
4. Look for inexpensive training equipment... our breaching wall was just built by some of the guys, a metal frame with some plywood and metal attached. A training building could be a shed with metal walls/room (good for setting smaller/short fires in because the actual shed doesn't burn down). We hang sheetrock, often leftovers from people's remodeling or something, in our "non-burn building" and use it to practice gaining access to a ceiling.
5. There are lots of good training tools for free on websites, short videos on techniques, videos from fires gone wrong (learning what not to do...), etc.
6. Build agreements with other depts. to use their training facilities. Some of the other volunteer depts. in our area have little or no training buildings/equipment, so they come to our station when we're not training and use it. Good for us, because they're on our mutual aid list and I'd prefer well-trained firefighters guarding my back when we get a big call.
hahhaha thats funny!---luckilly the guys don't mess with gear all too much...and no "siren oil" because i wouldn't fall for that one...there have beena few things tho- we have one of the new guys totally convinced the station is posessed-that ones a long story (we don't like him much)...im just waiting for what they have planned for my green tag "initiation" in a couple months.i've been tryin to figure out what theyr gonna do but with the 6 guys incharge of the interior guys, its hard to tell what they will do cuz me and them come up with some good stuff.
ITS A MIRICLE! oh my gosh last night we got approved to get all the programs necessary for the computer to get it up end useable, the comittee for the tv etc. got approved to pick out whatever digital camera and tv is in the best intrest of the company(we have good opeople in charge of that group so wer gettin the good shit) we have 500 to spend for a camera and like 1500 i think for a tv. and our internet should be installed in the next two weeks(down side is its only gonna be in the chief's office and commisioner's room for now) but we have the rest of that covered tho. : )
I had two young fireman at my house recently and really got them with a prank. I have a Minitor 5 pager with the record feature. We had had a call earlier in the day so while they were sitting there I reached down and hit the button to play the recording. It played the tones and the description of the call. Without thinking they got up and quickly left my house to respond to the station. After about 20 minutes of sitting at the station wondering where everyone was they called me on the cell wondering what was happening. I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. They showed up back at my house with big grins and laughing too.
Pretty good Chief....but paybacks can be hell.....LOL...I like the one that was pulled by nameless people...LOL ...Went out and got the largest g-string you ever saw, bright pink with polka dots no less...put a guys turn-outs on (Pants and boots) and then put the g-string on over them....then folded the pants down neatly and back in his locker where they belong.......Had a call...the guy comes busting in throws his gear on (not noticing the g-string) jumps in the truck, slaps airpack on...on scene (MVA) jumps out of the truck ready to go to work.......well it was priceless...and of course the press were there too....Stay safe....watch your back (I know I have to)....Paul
I like the idea of the free BP checks. I think I'll mention that at our meeting tomorrow night, since we've been looking for PR ideas- thanks!
LMAO- that beats the time I laid a Depends by the gear of one of our guys who has to run to the crapper on just about every fire.
yea they trued to get me with that one lucky for me i was paying attention and said they didn't need one because they where right handed and they're the same, and they got mad lol------but later that night they got two of the other guys we had them looking through every truck every compartment, through the station,..omg funny shit!
yea that is funny! you have no idea how many times that happens! most of the time its the guys bumping the buttons themselves and then responding, which makes it even better because they do it all on their own!!!
hahah
