Your biggest fear in firefighting

The most obvious answer(s) would be dying, being trapped, LODD's, etc, but I think all of us have some other little fears in the fire service such as:

- Being I.C. at a massive incident
- Heights
- Water rescue (maybe because you can't swim real well)

Mine would have to be pump operations. It's maybe not a "fear", but a lack of confidence in operating the truck the way it should be for the incident at hand.

Mine is searching a nursery, I always find myself closing my eyes when feeling around a babies cot and have to remind myself to keep them open.

I GUESS MINE WOULD HAVE TO BE HEIGHTS-HATE CLIMBING THAT LADDER -(AND I USED TO BE A PAINTER-LOL) , AND FALLING THROUGH A ROOF-THANK GOD NO BASEMENTS HERE. SOMETHING GOING TERRIBLY WRONG ON AN INTERIOR ATTACK. I THINK WE ALL HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FEAR IN THIS BUSINESS- YOU HAVE TOO, WE TRAIN AND READ PROBABLY EVERYTHING WE CAN TO KEEP OUR FAMILY SAFE, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS THAT "UNKNOWN" IN THIS BUSINESS.

yeah mine would have to be the ic i mean i have been ic at small scenes but not a massive one and the pump operations we have a truck that i have never really done much of anything with because it had to be fixed and was gone for awhile but the others trucks im ok with probally my biggest fear is screwing up or not remembering something on a scene so im always thinking lol

My biggest fear is missing an important detail, that would cause one of my firefighters to get hurt. This is a damn dangerous job, and it is important to make sure we all get back to the house. I read the niosh reports and see alot of miscues that could be avoided, by some simple training and equipment checks, and these are the things we do everyday. I think in some ways we become complacent in our attudes towards training and self evaluation not only as indidivuals but also as departments. Well in a nutshell, TRAIN,TRAIN,TRAIN,

For me it is heights. I think because I think of the possibility of falling and it is going to hurt alot when I hit bottom.

Mine would have to be extreme heights like over 2 stories or going to an accident with a close friend or family member involved. About a year into being a member a friend of mine from school, who was a neighbor, and a member of my dept slamed into a telephone pole head on. When you get there and see its someone that you are close to it changes the whole situation.
