I work for a very small private ambulance company. We are contracted with the city to provide EMS. Recently there has been a motion made to join the IAFF. We will be voting in 10 days. I am looking for any input yay or nay. Additionally, if anybody has experience with a similar situation I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
How can you join the IAFF if you are not part of a fire department? I worked hard to get a full time job and belong to the Union. I know that you are not in a unique situation, there are places all over that do this. I just don't get it.
There are a lot of EMS agencies, not affiliated with Fire departments around me that are part of the IAFF, usually part of a larger, regional local. I don't see any reason the IAFF shouldn't take EMS only agencies under its wing.
Unionizing really isn't a bad idea. What should be your biggest priorities (protecting your job, safety, workplace rights. etc.) are all aspects of the job that the IAFF fights for everyday.
I would vote yes!! The IAFF is an excellent organization with endless resources. When it comes contract time bring in your IAFF Regional business agent.
Thing is that an agency can belong to any union of their choosing. The IAFF is probably the most respected and most notable union and can offer the most resources and as such would probably be the best option for such a new local looking to form. The IAFF also does extensive work with EMS, even holding an IAFF EMS convention annually. The only way you would not see the IAFF supporting such a local would be if the private EMS employer was looking to take over EMS from an IAFF represented Fire/ EMS dept.
OP, I know you vote soon, I would vote yes, it would be worth it.
