Does anyone else train in their full turnouts while in the gym like jogging on the treadmill or doing the stair climber? Just curious on what you all do, so if you've got some ideas throw'em out. I've even started jogging in full turnouts with an scba on, wow what a workout for 30 minutes.

Nothing wrong with that, its just that I like working out and I want to get the most out of it. I can wear full turnouts and get what I do without them on in less than half the time.
no turnouts for me. i enjoy working out. i think just going outside in the early morning hour or late evening hours is the best time to work out. now i know it's a good ideak to train in your turnouts. Tj you havr the balls jogging for 30 minutes in you turnouts. i may be able to jog for 5 min. in my turnouts. did you start slow and build your way up to 30 min?
Yes, I did the treadmill for a month with no turnouts, then a month with just my coat and now I'm doing my coat and pants.
my chief has a saying ventilate whenever you can so im not about to go for a long run in my bunker gear
as for the scba na i dont think so a back pack with weights in yes
what we do is use our parking lot which has a set of steps in them. we are wearing full turnout, scba and on air. we roll and unroll hose. we carry 200' of 2'' over a distance, ladder the building climb the ladder and bring the ladder back down, we take a 6'' x 6'' and pound it with sledge simulating hitting with an axe, climb the stairs up and down with 200' of 2 1/2'' on your shoulder. etc. we work out but we try and use everyday stuff we would do. we train workout and work on air management at the same time.
Sounds like a great idea thanx!!!!
thats a great idea also. very good training!!!!
Yea I have done that befor I dont typically jog in them but when we do our tire workout or stair climb I put on gear makes it more work related.
A bunch of us are into CrossFit, an intense exercise program geared towards military, police and fire. It's not like your typical gym - you make it your own. Sometimes we'll knock out a routine with full gear for time. Train like you play, right? For more info: www.crossfitelpaso.com , www.crossfit.com
Right on, thanks
Thanks a lot, I'll check into these.
I use the elliptical or treadmill with my turnout jacket (more for the comfort of my shoulders), an SCBA, and a mask. It's more for learning air conservation and getting comfortable with being on air. I had problems with being claustrophobic in the mask and used the treadmill time to get used to it. Also very good for practicing steadying your breathing, taking deep breaths in and out to make your air last longer.

But for the rest of my workout, I agree with what everyone else has been saying. Don't train in full gear. You risk hurting yourself... the gear was not designed for a long workout or for those types of movements. Weighted vests, ankle/wrist weights, and carefully designed workouts can get you in shape.

My dept. trains one a week, running simulations of fires, in our training buildings... and then, yes, we train in full gear. We train exactly as we would do on a real fire scene.
