Training Ideas
My department needs some training ideas. Our department thinks that we keep doing the same training over and over again and again. We need to start doing some more advance training if anyone knows any training please let me know so i can give my training officer some ideas.

read through the different discussion areas and join some of the training groups. Lots of good ideas have been tossed around from training on playgrounds to tabletop scenarios to fire hose soccer.
Do you have any specific areas you want to target?

I had the same problem with my crew training. Our department training is more involved but during the day my crew consists of four firefighter/ paramedics. We cannot get to involved in case we get a call. I gave each of them an assigment to present something on building construction. That worked out great, now we are moving on to fire behavior. This is not the same material over and over, it is going way..way back to the basics and getting a refresher and new insight into firefighter safety.
Look at the Fire Engineering site, NFA site and fire house for ideas to build on. There is an excellent video on may days titled the meadowood lane may day. We watch it and had some really good discussion.

I think there are to many things we have to train on in the fire service for it to be boring. I can see how it can get mondane. Has your department considered getting out side instuctors to come in and possibly bring a more fresh out look on what you are covering? We essentially have to train on the same subjects our whole career. Sometimes the information changes with the times, but for the most part it's a state of mind. We all hate pulling hose in training but when the bell rings we are johnny on the spot to get it pulled and where it needs to go.

I suggest you get some guest speakers to come in and do some training with your Department. I know your Department isn't too far from Rock Island where I am a Battalion Chief. I'd be more than glad to come and teach some classes for you.

Paul I respectfully disagree. Whether you have 4 or 400 on duty crews still need to train. Now your in the same situation as my department. If you train hands on pulling hose, tools, flowing water etc there will be a delay when an alarm comes in. Only if you use the first out Engine.
A four person shift or department can still do hands on training with the use of a reserve unit. If you get a call, leave it and it will still be there when you return. If the whole shift doesn't have to respond, continue training with the people that are still present. Break the crew into teams, one performing the training while the other is observing and staying ready to respond if you need.

Our department does at least two hours of training each shift it ranges from ladder drills to hose drills. Some days we will do table top and we will even watch training video and then talk them over. The crew I work with my really like the what if drill this is were our captian gives us a situation and we discusse what each of us would do. And it helps because we learn something new every time.

Pick out areas in your response district and make an overhead projection so all can see .Assign certain conditions such as weather time of day etc. Discuss the alarms eliciting input from all as to tactics , apparatus positioning and problems to be expected plus solutions. Don't waste your time doing this in good weather but have it ready for those really bad weather days .
