What makes a good officer?? What makes you come to respect an officer? Anyone can have the title, but with title does it bring respect? I could get long winded however I'll hold back for a bit and save it for the replies lol.

Hey there Don,
It's a catch 22 either way you run it. My opinion is the Chief should be elected by the membership and the Chief should appoint his officers. There needs to be checks and balances as well. If it goes the old school way then the chief picks his buddies they all sit back and do nothing. If the membership elects them then there is a chance that its all a popularity contest. It not so much there is trouble finding the people to do the job, its a matter of the older officers that have the I've been there seen that you shouldn't make that mistake that happens. Yes everyone makes mistakes old or new officer. Truly if a person cant take a little criticism then they shouldn't be an officer. No matter what call you go on people look at it differently. Some have the go get it mentality some have the safer mentality. I've noticed a lot of the older guys in this business seem to have an issue with change. When you get new guys that want to come in want to learn they get out and see whats going on around them. And when they try to move forward they are halted by the older people who don't want change. Don't want to see a different way of doing things. And of course they don't because a lot of them cant hang with the knowledge out there. Its all proven fact prove methods. At my station we have 5 out of 20 that have 20 years plus. Myself i don't fall into that group yet.. but soon lol. Age means nothing when it comes training. There are people 21 22 years old that know more than guys that are 45 years old. However most wont listen to them because “they are a young guy”. New construction, new technology in car, appliances, chemicals, and the list goes on and on and on of new things that will kill us or those around us. No matter the age if you don't chase the knowledge of whats going on around us you are of no use trying to use the we did this 25 years ago so we will use it today..
So what about someone who doesn't run for officer but gets voted in anyway? does' that count as being a good officer or leader or is it because you have alot of voting friends?
HHHHMMMMMMM I would guess that depends on the group now wouldnt it lol..
I agree that people need to keep up on thier education, and god knows there are people out there that should have left years ago. I think new guys have some great ideals and with ideals come changes. Yes some people fight changes. The most important thing is to look at every aspect. can we do it, do we have the equipment, do we have the people, do we have the support. If you can support each question then it can be done. If not who can we get to help in this project. Alot of older guys dont have issues with change, alot of times it is how it is presented. A good well planned ideal will always prevail if you rocks are in line. I taken on some of the hardest people and slowly but surely it has come along. We have a requirement when you attend a class you must present a training on what you learned. THATS A START FOR EVEN THE YOUNG GUY OUT OF BASIC. And its amazing the old guys go" gee, when did they start doing that."
Correct you are Don. Getting everyone on board is a msjor issue. i think alot of it falls back on pride. we cant have this done or that done... takes time to bring it around.. so many closed minds to open doors
does it count if I threatened to kick his butt if he left???????
Giving it back to bob
On HELL no your not giving it back to bob
He should have to go in the tower at 85 degree angle for that comment. And oh, fully extended
Ill agree to that one for sure
I see the whole being a freind thing dealin with membership...and yes that is important, but i would rather have a guy that may not like me but respect me cuase I know what I'm doin. But I think that as respect builds you become more than friends......O yes BOTHERS. I think when a JR. FF is brought in there needs to be a mix of both U need to make it hard but yet you need to encurage the JR that this is not only going to help him( if he doesnt already see the message)but its gonna help the rest of the Dept. O and Thomas very well said. I dont think I could agree more.
thank you ballpein i will say that its about doing the task right and who is going to bring the jr ff from that place to the great ff he one day may become not many hours of watching youtube videos of firefighting operations but the officer(s) that are over him. The passion is in all of us the will to learn is there but whos going to take that time to build the ff up.
