It's sad to see that the Cop was more interested in traffic flow than the safety of others. Let the Fire Department take care of themselves. As we learn everyday, Shut it down. The traffic will still be there when we're done, will your crew? Everyone goes home
I would be willing to bet a lot of money that there is a serious ongoing inter-departmental problem there. You would have to be an idiot not to see that it is safer to leave the big red flashy truck there, instead of just yourself walking back and forth. An officer, of all people, should realize this.. more officers are struck on scene or while pulling over cars than any other emergency personel. Someone with a grudge I guess.
The police officer should be fired. It's apparent the officer doesn't care about safety of the public and our crews and his own. And a public apology is in order.
WE HAD A STATE TROOPER TRY AND DO THE SAME THING HERE IN MISSISSIPPI... OUR CHIEF MADE ONE CALL TO HIS CAPT. AND HE WAS MADE TO COME TO OUR STATION AND ADMIT HE WAS WRONG..... I DONT KNOW HOW IT IS OTHER PLACES BUT OUR OFFICERS HERE (NOT ALL OF THEM BUT THE BIGGEST PART OF THEM) WEAR JESUS SANDALS....... AS SOON AS WE ALL REALIZE THAT WE ARE ALL HERE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND NOT OUR EGOS WE WILL ALL BE ABLE TO DO BETTER JOBS.
I think everone forget's why we are there in the first place. I know alot of towns and city have a us and them attitude but when the smoke clears we all have the same goal and that's to do our job the safest way possible. Sorry public if your late for work....... We all came home in one piece along with the law enforcement officer.
It is a shame when a public officer{I E = policeman} will not cooperate with us firemen/rescue personnell. Locally we recieve very good cooperation from all the police depts..only problem we have is too many of the fire /rescue respond with their POV units,,,we prefer to have our fire tucks on scene rather than cars or trucks...more visibility and protection..on the interstate highways we try to set uo at least 800 foot safety zone at an accident.
I agree that the police officer was wrong, but the fire officer is also wrong look at how he jumped out of the apparatus while it was still moving! and no PPE. I didn't even see a refelective vest. He is lucky that the " if your so concerned with safety why did you do this and that" question wasnt asked in court. He would have had a hard time defending that one.
I agree. Looks like the same old police against fire battle again. He would have to arrest me everytime. Sooner or later my Chief would get tired of coming to get me out of jail and put a stop to it.
I admit I was not able to open the dashcam so I was unable to see it, But Its focused on only one thing anyway.. and Tunnel vision of any kind is the issue here...and always should be... the issue on the interstate..... In My state by State law The Senior Fire "officer" is ALWAYS in command . Period this includes single engine responses of Volunteer departments with only two Firefighters on board... Ultimately, GETTING the job done and getting everyone OFF the highway Safely ASAP is More important ten Playing ego games BY being STUPID as was the officers case The very concept that he'd Play around arresting Rather then Watching and trying to keep as safe as possible is scary, They ( Police ) Know better then anyone (doing DUI and traffic stops ) Often alone along the roadside without the benefit of a FIRE truck to hide behind /Protect you MUTES any "stupid act " by NOT wearing a Reflective vest In the daytime as Robert mentions above ...I have to wonder IF he' s A "suit" or ever been ON an interstate while JOHN q Public drives BY doing 30 MPH OVER the posted limit while eating french fries and talking on his cell phone while reading the newspaper driving 5 feet OFF someone elses bumper? Or maybe he lives In east podunk ... Safety Is paramount.. I have a Freind who ears ago was struck on a 2 lane section of Interstate 95, with no less then 8 pieces OFemergency appartus blocking BOTH lanes traffic STOPPED ... while a victim was being removed anothervictim passed out while sitting on a guardrail and as my freind went to aid the person, was struck by a car driven by a college student from a IVy league College on his way back to Boston.... The guy worked his way (ilegally up the Break down lane OFF the highway back around Apparatus Literally sideways to block and struck the firefighter who obviously wasnt watching as HE should have because He "KNEW " the road was totally shut down... The firefighter Lost a leg, spent 3 or 4 years of learning to walk with a prosteticdevice and then working out To take a physical test to provehe could still do the job (industrial firefighter) an support his 3 kids .. the student who was on a student visa was on a plane the next day Back home to avoid any responsebility ...

The only point here is PROTECT YOURSELF While the fire officer in question MIGHT not have been as SAFE as possible, The cop was wrong, and became stupid and wrong... The update of the suit of the officer having to pay 18,000 dollars might be extreme given nothing happened But will make him THINK hopefully a little more about what his job actually is an how to perform his duties IN an intelligent manner ..at least
I THINK THE OFFICER GOT OFF WITH A SLAP ON THE WRIST. HE MUST NOT WANT TO PROTECT THE INJURED. HE SHOULD HAVE GOT SUSPENDED.
Actually this has been covered by Webchief 2 weeks ago with a video and the cop was fined $18,000.

Based on salaries today I would have to consider this a lot more than a slap on the wrist.
The Trooper was just upset that he couldn't pass the Firefighter Enterance Exam and so he's a Cop. I can't tell you the many times that my crew has had close calls with vehicles. I've had a few Police Officers tell to move my rig out of the way of traffic and I've told them... "Sure and Now you stand right here and direct traffic around us". Their tune changes.
