Hi..

I was wondering..
I know that several places in the states the air-raid sirens are used for alerting the fire-departments, and as tornado warnings..

But are there any other uses for them?
In places where they are NOT used for calling out the fire-department, are they being tested once in a while, to remind the public of them?

TOrnado warnings and noon whistle for everyday except sunday. No longer use it for fires.
It sounds EVERY day at noon?

How about using it for example fire in chemical plants and so on, to warn the population?
We are very rural and no industry here. I guess we could use it for a gas spill at the local conveniance store. But I am sure no one would know what it meant LOL Yes everyday except sunday. Local Preachers said it was waking up the congragation LOL.
We use our siren for Tsunomi alerts and disaster warnings. We also test it monthly as well as use it every day at noon. It is not used to alert the firefighters any more.
well my fathers dept has one that goes off when theres a call between 8am and 8pm andn it sounds like a WWII era siren. my dept has one that is also used to signal a call. both are tested for tone tests
We use ours for fire calls
Oh, I better tell what we use them for i Denmark..

All of our sirens are from WW2, and they are being used for warning the population of disasters and things like that.
They are mostly used when there are fires in chemical plants and so on..
About the WW2 sirens, here is a videoclip of them:

I really hate that sound.. They sound so spooky, but then again that's the meaning...
Sure....for Air-raids silly......LOL
Where do you live, and how often do you get hit by airraids? LOL :-P
You beat me to it - but Air Raids would be the obvious answer.
Yup
Country South Australia is very prone to wildfires in Jan-Feb so if a fire occurs during a hot/windy total fire ban day the first arriving volunteer always sets off the station siren to alert the town that a fire is occuring but we also use it to alert our brigade members who miss the initial pager call that we need extra crew
