As a firefighter what specific course or class have you taken that you feel is invaluable to a FF? Is there any specific classes you would like to see added or mandated for certification purposes?

Personally, I belive any and all training is invaluable. This is a progressive field, and continuing to soak up everything you can get your hands on is critical.
I really got a lot out of the Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) class that I did a few months ago...with as many medical calls as we run now I thought it was a great hands on class, plus it comes with its own 2 year certification.
I would have to agree with Deanna, all training is valuable. Try a firefighter survival class if your looking for a class that helps you look outside the box so to speak, and then couple that with some RIT/ FAST training to be able to help others as well as yourself. Even if you don't have a RIT team the knowledge of how and what they do is very beneficial
ALL training is valuable to some point whether it is hands on, classroom or internet. I often times, well maybe sometimes is more accurate, go get training that I have already had just to use it as a refresher. If you took a pump operator class in 1997, and have not been the driver since 2002, it is nice to sit in on a pump session to pick up some pieces you may have forgotten along the way.
As the others have said, take as much training as you can. Don't focus on interior vs. exterior or EMS vs. Haz Mat; try to get exposed to as much as you can. Also don't focus on getting the certificate, but LEARN what is being taught by jumping in and mastering the skills.

As firefighters you will see a lot of different situations and problems besides fires. Alarm systems, gas smells, CO detectors, crashes, CPR, sawing trees to open up roads, directing traffic, pump operations - the list goes on and on.

The more you learn, the more you will be prepared when the pager goes off, and how to deal with whatever problem you're called to.

Good response. I used to think Haz MAt was for the birds, until I took my first course and the absolutely loved it. Became a haz mat instructor and worked on the Haz mat team. All because I decided to get a little extra training one day!
That sounds really interesting I would like to do that, ty!Diana
Looking forward to taking this at Fire school.
Best class I ever took was a street survival class taught by a PA state trooper. They made up several rooms that included all the props for bedroom, living room...etc and then hid weapons in them. If you didnt spot the weapon the "bad" guy would use it on you. The class even covered how to approach a vehicle, and basic self defense moves to break contact and get away. Took the class about 8 years ago and still remember most of what they taught. In 20 years of emergency service classes and all the years of schooling prior to that was the best ever( fact that it is designed to send me home after every shift makes it all the better)
building construction for the fire service is a excellent class. and of course all training is good, You Train Today to Live Tomorrow.
I took a RIT/survival class called "getting out alive and saving our own." I was lucky enough to take it a professional dept. who handled it really well. All of the evolutions were awesome. Bailing out 2nd story windows on a rope or head first down a ladder, denver drill, etc. I knew it was an awesome class because I learned alot and I was sore for days lol
Two specific courses come to mind. Firefighter safety and survival and The Art of Reading Smoke. I took FF Safety and Survival with one other guy from my department. Then when I became assistant chief and the training officer I scheduled the course for the enitre department.
