San Diego city firefighters agree on a two-year contract that includes giving up all of their holiday hours and picking up a larger amount of retirement pay, Mayor Jerry Sanders announces. The firefighters' union, representing about 1,400 firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, is the first of city's three unions to ratify labor contracts that could help retain city jobs and close the city's massive budget gap.
Whether or not Mayor Sanders gets a raise, I think we will be seeing alot more of this in the near future. It is obviously sad. On the other they are not losing their jobs.
The most unfortunate thing is that the guys at the "top" who hold the purse strings have had years,..decades of poor decision making to have it end up here, and ultimately they do not suffer...the rank and file do.
We in the city of Boston are going thru contract talks. They have gotten ugly, city leaks half truths to media. Anyway, the city is asking the unions for a pay freeze for fiscal yr starting in july. Hard to do with no raise in three years...but they still ask. Anyway, the city has asked the unions, after giving the mayor and all dept heads a 4.5% pay raise for the same fiscal yr. Then the city dept heads attempt to play the good guy and give back 3% for the year and tell the media how they are great and did the right thing by not taking a raise.......if ya paid attention you would have noticed that 4.5 minus 3 is 1.5!! Them SOB's still got a 1.5 % raise in the same year they are asking the unions to freeze there pay! I say ya give nothing back and never trust a politician!
Sorry to hear this However my hat is off to the union for realizing that if not done they wold be layed off or worse. better to loose a little than all.
