Is everyone ready for this years FILL THE BOOT? I think it is for a wonderful cause. How many departments out there participate? What are some good ways to raise money?
I/We (Greenfield Fire/WI) have done the FTB for the past 11 years. I too am very passionate about the event, I have had some close ties to people with MD-unfortunately they've died from the illness. If anything, that alone has encouraged me to want to do more and more every year. In our 11 years we have raised over $100,000.00, our best year we raised over $15,000.00 in one day. We do it on Labor Day for 6 hours. In fact I introduced this event to our department-Prior to doing the FTB I was a volunteer at MD Summer Camp, when I wasn't able to attend anymore I decided to do FTB. We have our event so well planned out that it pretty much runs itself. We go to one of our busiest intersections in the city and collect. We have a restaurant nearby that donates lunch each year. Also, a nearby bank has two women who offer to come in on Labor Day to count the money and deposit it for us. We have the majority of our members doing it off duty, although the on duty crews can come and help if they wish. It's a blast and we and the community look forward to it each year. We have been so successful with our FTB that we have been in the top 10 money makers in Wisconsin for many years, also; our program has served as a template for allot of neighboring departments. Good luck this year!!!
Deanna, we do the "Fill the boot" during our annual Azalea festival parade. We are in the parade every year and have firefighters walking along the parade route while the trucks are driving down the road and the firefighters go along collecting money from the people along the parade route. We do really well with this every year. We tried the road block thing one year and didnt like what we felt was highway robbery. The way we do it now people only participate if they want to. Thats the way it should be.
Along the lines of media coverage and participation.
