i'm hearing a trend here. many people are saying "the 1010's nice...but i like my leather." i went from a bubble, to a 1010, to a conway american heritage, to a sam houston (that'll be waiting for me when i get home!!!). i loved the 1010, don't get me wrong, but i've also tried the houston's, and i can't wait to start riding with mine.
back to your question though...if you are absolutely going to get the 1010 or the 1044... get the 1010. if you have the cash to swing it, get yourself a leather. your head will thank you.
The 1010 is painted the color of choice. The 1044 on the other hand is molded the color of choice. So the 1010 when it is scratched you see the primer grey color, and 1044 the scratches are harder to see as they are the color of choice. I just purchased a 1044 with the leather upgrade and defender shield. It seems a little bit heavier than the 1010 but it's not uncomfortable. Both are great helmets!
ya lost me a little bit. my 1010 got some pretty good gashes in it, and i never saw any primer coming through. the guy i passed it to has put it through the ringer as well, and it's holding up great. i'm pretty sure the only difference is the finish. one's matte, the other's gloss.
i'm also curious as to what this leather upgrade is. where did you get it? what do they do/add/change on the hemet?
For all of you salad bowl wearers, the Defender is now available for you too.
First, there are multiple things here. The 1010 does not use a grey primer. The fiberglass shell is painted. You will notice white when you ding it or scratch it. This is the fiberglass showing through. Second, the 1044 is made from Duraglass that has the color all the way through it. Third, the leather upgrade that he is referring to, is the liner for your noggin. The standard helmets have the flannel head liner, the leather is an upgrade. This is just a matter of changing our the liner. And last, you do not have to order your helmets "as is" from the big guys who stock a bagillion helmets. You can get whatever configuration that you want. That is why I do not show prices on my website. I want to talk to the new owner and make sure that they get exactly what they want.
I have the cairns 1010 and have the defender visor, i also added on the face shield for structure fires because of the fact you Can't wear them in a structure fire. It works great as a combination
From experience, go with the 1010! Resist cracking and chiping and if by some reason it does either one the color is all the way through the helmet so you will hardly be able to see any blemishes! I bought one last year and its still in right out of the box condition! Not one chip, crack or scratch! Also, it has a better heat rating than the 1044. The style is exactly the same but these features stand out the most and are very benificial!
You have your information intertwined here. The 1010 is a painted helmet that will show white when chipped under the paint. The 1044 is colored all the way through. They both have to pass the same NFPA heat tests and are both NFPA compliant.
I HAVE THE CAIRNS 1010 AT THE FIRE HOUSE I REALLY LIKE IT IT IS NOT SO HEAVY IT FITS LIKE A GLOVE AND YES IF IT GETS NICKED IT DOES TURN WHITE BUT THE 1044 HAS THE MATTE FINISH AND IT DOES KEEP THE COLOR ALL THE WAY THRU BUT IF YOU WANT A GOOD HELMET I SUGGEST THE 1010
sorry! I mixed my numbers up in my reply! Swith out 1010 with the 1044! I have the 1044 and I wouldn't trade it for any other helmet!
The 1010 is a fiberglass helmet. The 1044 is a proprietary material called Duraglass. And no, they are not the same material at all. Pretty sure on this one, I am a dealer.
