MAHOPAC, N.Y. (AP) -- Police said a man who left his house after it caught fire early Sunday didn't bother running to a neighbor for help. Instead, he drove about a mile on his all-terrain vehicle to a friend's house, but couldn't get anyone out of bed there. So he went to sleep in a boat parked on the property.

Police said the man was in his basement when an ember from the fireplace ignited a rug. It took firefighters about an hour to knock down the blaze after it was reported by a resident.

Carmel Police Chief Michael Johnson said the man could have saved a lot of effort _ and possibly the house _ by alerting authorities right away. They feared he had died in the fire, and summoned a cadaver dog.

Police went searching for the man and arrested him about six hours later after finding him with cocaine.

The suspect has a court hearing scheduled on Wednesday.

I FOUGHT THIS FIRE WHEN WE GOT THERE IT WAS FULLY INVOLVED AND WAS ABOUT 300 YARDS FROM THE ROAD IT TOOK US FROM 4:30 IN THE MORNING TO ABOUT 8 AM TO GET IT PUT ALL THE WAY OUT WE HAD TO DO A SURROUND AND DROWN BY THE TIME ALL WAS SAID AND DONE IT WAS TOTALY GONE THE CALL CAME IN AS AS SOMEONE CALLING 911 AND THEY COULD SEE FIRE BUT THEY DIDNT KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMEING FROM DO TO THE WOODS
Wow. Scary to think that you and your crews could have potentially put yourselves in danger to perform a rescue for a non-existant resident. It's probably a good thing you were in defensive attack. What a knuckle-head. I wonder if his insurance will cover his loss. Stay safe.
it wasnt his house the house belonged to a friend and was letting him stay there he wasnt charged with anything but the cocaine
Wow. That is sad. Nice friend. You think his buddy will offer him a place to stay again?
i dont know but i bet he gets a place to stay rent free for a few years lol
With friends like him, who needs enemies?
We had one about six months ago where a grow operation caught fire, and didn't spread far, but the homeowner got up and left and didn't come back. They left all of their info on the table including wallet and cell phone so the Sherrif could find them though.......amazing what dope will make you do....
