Oklahoma Fire Chief Killed in Grain Elevator Blaze, Five Firefighters Injured

KTUL is reporting that a firefighter from Hydro, Oklahoma has been killed and five others injured, one seriously, in a blaze at a grain elevator today.

The fire started at around 10:30 a.m. local time when a soy bean storage bin caught fire. Crews continued to battle the blaze into the afternoon and several nearby homes were evacuated. The town is about 70 miles west of Oklahoma City, the station reports.

My heart goes out to the family of Chief Schmidt. It is always a horrible thing when someone gives their life doing this job. My thoughts are also with the members that will have to deal with the void left in both their hearts and their organization.

This one is kind of close to home for me. I used to live in a trailer park between Weatherford and Hydro so I am very familiar with this area. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the fireman that was lost and also to the families of the injured firefighters. Get well soon.
