Do you automaticly become a senior member on the department once you get your FF1, I am 18 and soon gonna be joining a department, I was just curious would I still be considered a junior with a FF1 or no, Also almost every weekend I ve been going to my friends firehouse to prepare myself for fire school going over the trucks, doing simulators of an interior doing a left hand man search etc, even how to setup a ladder and how safely work on a ladder.

once u turn 18 in our sta. u r no longer considered at jr. member
In our State you must be 18 before you can be a Firefighter period. Firefighter I is acquired by spending at least 6 months on your Department, attending drills and a regular basis to complete the required specific education and completing a State test at the end of that. So, Firefighter I as you describe it is more then just a title. It is a leval of training and experience. Senior as you call it is as damnthing describes it above. You'll get there Bro. Your on the right track.
Yea I like I said Ive been doing drills with my buddys these past couple of week's and they said I am doing pretty well, the one of my friends said I do better then some of the probies at his station, he's gonna try and get me in there as well.
I would have to agree with damnthing. To me a senior member is one who has at least 10 yrs or more in depending on the size of the dept. Like for FDNY at a busy house maybe 2 or 3 yrs.
in my dept. your either a junior(age12-16) or your in fire suppression(ff1 thru cheif). anyone else that wants tio be part of the dept must join the auxillary.<---sry spelling
FF1 is the first class you're required to pass. You have to have it just to be allowed onto probationary status. Once you pass FF1, then you go onto probationary status for a year. FF1 gives you the absolute basic knowledge you need to operate on a fire scene, under the command of a more capable and experienced person. Don't even for a minute think it gives you any more than that. You have to earn a senior status. Of course, for us, there's firefighters and senior firefighters, and the seniors aren't official, we're just the ones that the other members of the department refer to that way. I took it as a pretty serious honor when I hit that level, but it took alot of work and training and 6 years to get there. I spent $2000 a year of the training budget going to classes, and got involved with the workings of the dept, and took as much responsibility as they'd let me have.
As for age, you're required to be 18 and a high school graduate to apply and go to initial training, and 21 to become involved in the driving, special ops, and command stuff.
In my department once you turn 18 you are considered a regular member in our department.
Yea Iam 18 and live in Jersey, some of your response's are understandable.
I am in agrreeance with the others. "Senior" member is something you have to earn over time. Good luck with your FF1 and never stop training or learing. TCSS and buckle up.
Never Said I was different, I though once you were 18 you went straight to probation for 6 months or however long it is, and then you get a black helmet instead of a blue one. is the test hard I heard in the state of NJ you have to at least get a 70 or better on the test in order to pass.
that is true, I will agree with that.
Depends on your term "senior member" I would say no as a senior member would be someone with years of expirence, being new and 18 would make you a newbie.
