House sirens?
Hey guys, A long time ago, i remember my firehouse (before i even joined)
used to sound the sirens, at the house, to alert firefighters to fires, i believe, and they used to do it at noon too.. But they don't do it anymore. No fire company in the area does it anymore, only for some parades. Why is this? i mean, we have pagers to alert us but didn't the sirens serve another purpose too?
I miss them, that was such a rush! :P

For my department me use pagers and sirens. I believe we have 5 sirens spread thru out the town.
We use the sirens mostly for fire calls but if there's severe weather they go off to warn everyone.

Same here we blow are sirens on all calls and bad weather and the funny part is that it sounds like a sick cow but you know its your station going off lol and they do a 6,30 test to But in some towns it says they are to loud to blow

We still use them. We have two in our neighborhood. Sirens were first used years ago as air raid sirens in case of an incoming bombing. They (sirens) are now used to alert firefighters of alerms and severe weather warnings

At one time quite common, sirens came about as a result of civil defense and the need to warn of impending air raids. The midwest used them more commonly to warn of severe weather. The fire service started using them as they warned a larger area than the fire phones did.
However, we now live in a country of whiners and wienies. The noise wakes people up at night, and disturbs their TV during the daytime. In many parts of the country, towns have even prohibited trains from sounding their horns at crossings... because it disturbs people.

Sirens were traditionally the method used here to alert volunteers that they had a call. The use of pagers makes the sirens unneeded, you can always hear/feel your pager, a siren? Not always.
We still have one, and run it every Sunday at noon - people tell us they like to be warned that it's time to cook lunch...
And Brendon, such a rush? Perhaps the extra 'rush' is something we can do without if we want a safe trip to the Station?

My dept has a siren it sounds 1 blast everyday at noon,4 times is a fire call,2 is ambulance. They are not supposed to use for amb after 9PM,but fire is 24/7. We also have our pagers. I am all for tradition,but when the siren is sounding it is so loud you can't hear your pager if you are in the fire house.
