Do you have to be a US citizen?

Answer: No. You need to have permission to work in this country.
Glad someone knew cause I didn't know.
This is only for the paramedic?? Or you paramedic and firefighter same??
Or you paramedic and firefighter same?? No, they are separate branch within the FDNY.

I''m trying to find a FAQ part for firefighters. but only one shows up so far in their site. It talked about the Paramedic options.

But this is another options for the "lateral movement" or be promoted to firefighter position. In short, a stepping stone going the full fledge firefighter. Check out further on the FDNY Paramedic FAQ. on the question of how to be move up to be a firefighter....

Any guys from FDNY?............
Seeing that there are massive layoffs coming down at FDNY on both the fire and ems side I highly doubt they are hiring anyone.
To be hired as a New York City Firefighter, you must:

* Pass both the written and physical exams;
* Pass a medical exam and background investigation;
* Be at least 21 years of age;
* Be a U.S. citizen;
* Have at least 15 college semester credits earned as a result of satisfactory completion of course work at a college or university accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education or full time military service with an honorable discharge; or 6 months of full time, satisfactory paid work experience;
* Hold a motor vehicle driver's license valid in New York State;
* Be a resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City, or live in Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester County;
* Be a Certified First Responder with Defibrillation (CFR-D)*.

* All Probationary Firefighters are required to be a CFR-D. First-year Firefighters who lack this certification will be provided with training at their own expense.

Copy and pasted from the FDNY web site. As you can see, you must be a US citizen.
I thought so Jay... so Rusfire, the only way to work for FDNY is in EMS. But I agree on Rescue601, I saw the thread few days ago about closing down some few fire stations and some EMS units due to budgets cuts. That's the bad news.
Strange, very strange that there is a large fire department having problems and are very sorry that it so difficult to find work ... we have all too bad, after the russian fire dept came to the Ministry of extremely situations (MCS), immediately began firing, cancellation of benefits, many have been dismissed, but work still need to then
Don't give up brother, just stick around at FFN. who knows, there might be better fire departments here.
Ok, at least in New York, I just fly to, even just on holiday, I love this city)
I hope that everything will change for the better
I wrote Most of US dpeartments require citizenship or "naturalization" over "Green card" work visa (?)

I tryed Googles' translater but dont feel the translation "works" very well..

Я думаю, что "большинство" Munciple ведомств в гражданстве государства требуют, чтобы employement. хотя некоторые могут включать "натурализованы" в эти дни, но я сомневаюсь зеленую карту Только бы это сделать ...

This does not translate well...,.. in either direction :^P

I think that the "majority" Munciple departments in the nationality of the State require that the employement. although some may include a "naturalized" in those days, but I doubt the green card is only to do it ...
