New York Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Shot, Killed at Medical Scene
FFN - A Cape Vincent, New York man who lived and breathed emergency services was tragically shot and killed by a man he was trying to help Friday night.
Mark Davis, 25, a two-year member of the Cape Vincent Fire Department, was reportedly gunned down by Christopher Burke. Davis and other crew members were attending to Burke when the victim left the room, returning with a rifle, according to news reports.
The crew tried leaving the situation, but two shots rang out, with at least one striking Davis.

"EMTs at the scene fervently attempted life saving measures, and continued these efforts during the ambulance transport to the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY where he was pronounced deceased," a New York State Police report said. (WWTI Photo Slideshow - News 10 Video)
"Burke became agitated and retrieved a high powered rifle from the bedroom of the residence, police said. As the EMT’s were retreating from the residence, it is alleged that Burke fired two rounds, one at the victim striking and killing him, they said.," state police said. "The suspect then ran from the residence and was tackled and held down by another EMT who was also at the residence."
Davis was a member or employee of several emergency organizations in the area, WWTI reported in a profile of the victim. He was enrolled in a paramedic program at a local college and worked ful time at an ambulance company in Watertown, New York.
The Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service, where Davis was a volunteer since 2007, posted a tribute to him online Saturday.
"He was one of those guys that EMS was what he lived for," Cape Vincent First Assistant Chief William E. Gould II told the Watertown Times,
Burke was arrested and charged with second degree murder, WYSR reports. He was arraigned Saturday morning.
WWTI reported that police were not yet revealing what type of emergency EMS crews were on the scene for.
Cape Vincent is about 90 miles north of Syracuse, near the Canadian border.

I carry a Glock 19 at all times. I have my gun permit and alot others at our station have them. I hate to hear of this happening but my brothers you have to look out for number one first then your brother. It makes you leary of trying to help people, and the innocent suffer because of thing like this. Stay safe my brothers !!!!!

R.I.P Mark. You were an amazing friend to my boyfriend and an amazing firefighter and EMT. You made me laugh in scene support so many times and helped me and your sister and others with our knots, raising and lowering ladders, and all the stuff that we had to do. I remember just laughing in class and having fun doing what we were doing. The last time i saw you, i never expected it to be the last. You will be missed friend, and the EMS and Fire service of Jefferson county will never be the same. We were shaken and broken, knowing this could have been anyone of us. Some may get out because they can't imagine what it will be like now, but I, with others like me, are going to run in your name, because you would have wanted it.
To the murderer, there is no doubt in my mind you are scum. Someone trying to help you, you kill. I don't care waht the reason was, you killed another human being. I can't even call you a man, let alone a human being. What was going through your mind. May god have no mercy on you and you rot in hell for the rest of eternity, along with others like you. There is no spot on earth for the things you have done. I hope you get put to death over this.
Funeral arraingments are complete. Calling hours are from noon to nine on friday febuary 6th at the United Methodist Church in Cape Vincent.
He will be given a full firefighter and emt funeral on Saturday the 7th at Thousand Islands central school. Trucks are meeting at 11 at Chaumont Fire Hall. After the funeral there will be a firefighter and fire truck processional to the fire hall where the tones will be rung out and the bell rung for Mark Davis' last call, with a reception to follow. A memorial fund has been set up in his name for his family, who is involved in Emergency Services.
May god bless your Mark, and watch over me and everyone from up there. God must have needed someone else to run calls up there, and he knew you were the man for the job.

My heart felt condolences to Marks family, the Cape Vincent Fire Department, and all of the other fine Agencies who responded. We all know the dangers that we face when the pager goes off, BUT, it should not likely happen on a medical call. Perhaps body armor should now become " standard issue" for all Fire and EMS First responders. Rest in Peace my Fallen Brother. Summerland awaits.

Greg, I'll be driving up from Ulster County with one or two others on Saturday morninig (5 hour drive). No apparatus (too far). Should we plan on meeting at the Chaumet Fire house or go right to the high school? Not quite sure where that firehouse is.

My full time job right now is working as a floral designer, at a flower shop in Watertown, NY. I feel honored to be some of the floral tributes for Mark's Memorial Service. I am in total awe, at the outpouring of of tributes we have been asked to do. The "Star of Life", "Broken Ladder", and the " Maltese Cross" are just a few of the orders that I have seen. My colleagues and I promise to make absolutely sure that EVERYTHING that we do is perfect.
When one Brother falls, we all fall. We will all rise to salute our Fallen Brother.
