Hers one for you guys...
One of our Fire Fighters on my department, was recently pulled over, and yelled at by a local sheriff, while running to our station for a rescue run. The sheriff told him he was not allowed to run lights and siren after the squad has left the station. Our county has no written protocols pertaining to this. We have asked our chief, and our Township trustee, they told us to respond to station as if the squad has not left, as we have 2 squads, and we have to man our stations.
What do you think of the sheriff and this situation?
my understanding is that your pov is inspected and turned into the bmv. you are required to put the sticker along with the numbers they give you on another sticker. that registers your pov as an energancy vehical. but you must follow all traffic laws. from what i understand you my go 10 over the speed limit. if you run lights you must run a siren.
How often do you see a state police or S.O. break t he laws just to get home earlier and not get in trouble for it. (For one they are better than everyone else. ) my honest opinon. If your personal vechile has red lights and siren, from my understanding it is now an emergency vechile for your county or city.
Best bet is to get an SOP (standard operating procedure) for your department on the uses of red lights and siren.
True that, I was relay pumping from tenders to the fire attack engine and the sheriff comes to me and tells me to move my engine so he can pull ahead and turn around (we were on a narrow 2 lane gravel road) Needless to say I informed him that there was no way I was going to move my engine. He could just back out.
I am not a volunteer and perhaps I do not fully understand, but in my own personal opinion, members should never run lights and sirens to get to the Firehouse, either in POV's or apparatus. If you have the call volume, than you should opt for staffing your firehouse. The number of accidents involving members in POV's speaks for itself.
