I found a gov. website that has grants to help firefighters be better prepared for anything they might face on a call in their districts like hazardous materials being stored and things like that.
The description is as follows. My question is is this commonly known amoung fire departments?
I would like to contact my councilman here in Buffalo NY and ask if they do this but I just wanted to see if all departments are already doing it or is it a well kept secret?

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. The Grant Programs Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency administers the grants in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. For fiscal year 2005, Congress reauthorized the Assistance to Firefighters Grants for an additional 5 years through 2010.

It hasn't been much of a secret around my neck of the woods. If I am correct they have been applying for this grant locally for the past 5 years or so. Be forewarned, there is a LOT of interest in this grant, and also a lot of applications. Be prepared to work your ass off to make this grant writing top notch or you will be on the outside looking in.

Good Luck
How true, I worked hard and felt good about our last application, but got declined. We thought we were NIMS compliant according to the information we received when we took the course, but found out we lost out on the grant because we were not 100% compliant. NIMS has changed and we found out the hard way. You will also need a Dun & Bradstreet number to apply, and that you better start getting now to make the deadline. This grant is a lot of hard work, but it is worth it, we got one for SCBAs and a thermal image camera.
Yep. Have applied for 7 years in a row. FY 2007 received $250,000.00 for a new engine. FY 2008 received $ 35,000.00 for a cascade and fill station. FY 2009 just around the corner.

Very competitive
